TV matters: The BBC's Party Election Broadcast crash (Guardian)

When David Cameron's programme came a cropper on the BBC, it was briefly like the early days of TV During Tuesday night's Party Election Broadcast on BBC1, even David Cameron's detractors were for once hanging on his every word ? just to see if they actually came out. The broadcast had begun with a run of black and white images, devoid of commentary, which seemed a bit Bergmanesque even in a political world in which many image-handlers would rather win an Oscar than an election. This sombre montage was suddenly replaced by a white-on-red caption card reading: "We are sorry for the break in this programme and are trying to correct the fault." Over this, the voice of a continuity announcer: "Sorry about that . . . returning in a moment . . . please be patient . . . play some music." But, instead of the filler symphony, up popped Cameron orating about council tax, before hastily being replaced by the printed repentant sentence again.
