GM sees strong growth in China auto sales

SHANGHAI (AP) ? GM's sales in China jumped 10 percent to a record 220,412 vehicles in October, helped by renewed demand for its minivans.

Sales by General Motors Co. and its China joint ventures have exceeded 2.1 million so far this year, up about 7 percent from the 1,976,913 vehicles it sold in January-October 2010, the company said Monday.

Despite strong demand in some areas, especially luxury vehicles and SUVs and some GM models, overall demand in China, the world's largest auto market, has been lackluster this year.

Ford Motor China said its sales in October were flat compared with a year earlier at 40,857 vehicles, though its January-October sales were up 9 percent from a year earlier, at 426,814 vehicles.

Sales figures for domestic automakers are due later this week.

Dealerships saw business slow this year after the government ended tax incentives and subsidies meant to encourage purchases of small, fuel efficient cars. Licensing quotas and other restrictions meant to help control chronic traffic jams have also hurt.

But foreign automakers have fared better than local ones, and GM has reported strong growth in demand for its Chevrolet Cruze and its Buick Excelle sedan and New Regal.

Reviving after a slow start this year, sales of minivehicles by Shanghai-GM-Wuling jumped 19 percent to 111,957 in October, GM said. Minivehicles includes van and some small cars.

But sales by GM's joint venture with FAW dropped 32 percent to 4,408 vehicles, the company said without elaborating.

In 2010, GM sold more than 2.35 million vehicles in China, up 28.8 percent from a year earlier.

(AP) ? The lone protester in an Atlanta park was arrested after refusing to leave by a Sunday night curfew, a day after 19 demonstrators were taken to jail by officers in riot gear when a rally spilled into the streets.

The woman was draped in an American flag as dozens more demonstrators stood behind barricades surrounding Woodruff Park, where police had warned they would enforce an 11 p.m. curfew. Occupy Atlanta organizer Tim Franzen said having one person protesting was just as powerful as several.

The group held its general assembly meeting earlier in the evening, then marched back to the downtown park. Police spokesman Carlos Campos said officers were watching. Police issued three warnings to leave the park. Usually after the third, they have moved in to make arrests.

Occupy Atlanta organizers earlier said they planned to again camp at the park, setting up yet another potential showdown with police and the mayor.

Anti-Wall Street protesters across the country have been arrested in recent weeks, most for curfew violations. Some of the most intense confrontations between demonstrators and police have been in Oakland, Calif., where two Iraq War veterans have been hurt in separate clashes with officers.

In Atlanta, 19 people were arrested on charges they refused to leave the park after curfew or blocked city roads, police said. Franzen said most got out of jail Sunday, while one person charged with aggravated assault and obstruction likely won't be bailed out until sometime this week.

Before Saturday's 11 p.m. curfew, a crowd of several hundred protesters had set up tents at Woodruff Park, the scene of about 50 arrests of demonstrators last month. Organizers had said they planned to stay overnight despite warnings from the mayor and police that anyone there past closing would be arrested.

But as the deadline approached, protesters began decamping peacefully. Dozens of officers were on hand, herding protesters away from the park's entrances and installing barricades around it. A police helicopter flew overhead.

While most protesters left the park, a few people stayed behind. Many spilled onto Peachtree Street, blocking roads. An officer on a motorcycle, with its lights and siren turned on, drove into a crowd marching on the street.

Video of the incident appears to show two people pushing against the front of the motorcycle as the engine revs. A scuffle ensues when a third person intervenes, which leads to a sometimes tense confrontation between protesters and officers.

Police officers in riot gear and on horseback filled the street, warning protesters to stay on the sidewalk. The protesters shouted at the officers, chanting slogans such as, "Shame! Shame!" and "What about your pensions?" A small group yelled more insulting things like, "Put the pigs back in their sty, we the people occupy."

Sunday night, protesters chanted, "We're hungry. We're poor. What are you wasting our money for?"

Protesters began camping out in Woodruff Park on Oct. 7. Mayor Kasim Reed initially issued an executive order allowing them to stay overnight, but later revoked it after he said there were increasing security concerns.

"Mayor Reed was clear earlier this week in his public statements that the City of Atlanta would arrest any persons who violated the law," Police Chief George Turner said. The statement added warnings were issued over a loudspeaker repeatedly in English and Spanish before the latest arrests.

Saturday's crowd swelled during the brisk evening, as the Rev. Jesse Jackson paid an early evening visit to show his support. He told those gathered that the movement was an extension of Martin Luther King Jr.'s Poor People's Campaign.

Hours later, though, Occupy Atlanta organizer Latron Price of Atlanta said he was disappointed that the situation grew confrontational.

"As responsible occupiers, we have to step up and try to display an example that the overall agenda is not about confrontation with police," he told The Associated Press. "We need to deal with the banks, we need to deal with home foreclosures, and we need to deal with wealth disparity."

Franzen said on Sunday that one protester manning the park is safer after what happened the night before.

Asked about the exchanges with police, the 37-year-old Price said, "That has me equally upset because we're losing what we came here to do, which is to protest peacefully."

He said protesters need to regroup and focus on a nonviolent message.

La'die Mansfield, 29, a spokeswoman for the Occupy Atlanta, said the police used "unnecessary force."

"Today is a sad day for us. It's almost like we're seeing a little bit of what happened in Oakland here, not to the extent," she said. "Today was just a reminder of the system that we have, the corrupt system."

Fitbit Ultra

Trying to shed a few pounds, increase your daily physical activity, improve your sleep, or otherwise smooth out your health takes constant vigilance, at least at first, until you develop solid habits that turn into a lifestyle. All the factors, when mixed with real life, can become cloudy and difficult to track. Fitbit Ultra?($99.95, direct) is a smart pedometer that tracks how many steps you take in a day, the flights of stairs you climb, the distance you travel, the number of calories you burn, and even how much restful sleep you get. It automates much of the hard work of keeping tabs on your health, and uploads the data to a companion Web account where you can add even more statistics, like what foods you've eaten and other activities that Fitbit can't track on its own, like cycling.

Design
Inconspicuous and sleek, the Fitbit pedometer measures a compact 2.1 inches by 0.75 inch by 0.56 inch (HWD) and weights a scant 0.4 ounce. The device itself is matte black, but is available in two accent colors: blue and plum. A single button lets you cycle through a blue LED display that shows the time, as well as activity recorded so far that day, such as miles traveled, stairs climbed, and feedback about your overall activity in the form of a flower that grows taller the more you move. The battery has remarkable staying power. I only recharged the battery every three or four days while testing, and never once did I see it dip below 25 percent.

Clip Fitbit onto a waistband, the fold of a dress, a belt loop, or hide it out of sight by attaching it to the center front of a bra, and the Fitbit securely stays in place. I wore our Fitbit review unit for more than a month, clipping it anywhere between hip and chest height, and never saw it budge.

Fitbit also comes with a USB base station, used for charging the device and wirelessly uploading data from Fitbit to your Web account whenever you are within a few feet of the base. You also get a Velcro wristband that holds the Fitbit while you're sleeping if you want to track your sleep.

Set Up
Out of the box, Fitbit is functional and ready to roll, although you have to set up your Web account and prepare the device to sync to it (which requires a small download, too), and this is where I found the device less user-friendly than it at first seems. Very little information is provided in the product packaging, and the online instructions are simple, but don't provide enough details about troubleshooting or explaining what you should see once the sync is successful. What's confusing is the pedometer will charge up, record your steps, and seem to be functioning just fine, even when it hasn't tethered to your Web account. The time will be off, and it will calculate a 24-hour day starting whenever you took it out of the box and charged it (rather than resetting at midnight), but other than that, it works.

After a few days of suspecting something was wrong (why was my data not showing up online even though the pedometer was counting my steps?), I started over again with the syncing process, and the second time, it took. The key piece of information to look for is a line that reads "Synched: date and time" in your profile. When I tried the set-up process a second time, it worked, although the small downloadable software that facilitates the initialization actually crashed at the end. It still took, but it wasn't entirely smooth.

Features
Fitbit uses both an accelerometer and an altimeter to count the number of steps you take and the stairs you climb. The online account uses that information, in conjunction with some personal data, like your height and weight, to also calculate how many calories you burn.

The altimeter works surprisingly well for a $100 device, able to account for changes in pressure that aren't caused by climbing, like car doors opening and closing. However, while testing the device, I rode my bicycle several times over a bridge that's several stories high, which did affect the reading.

Bicycling and other most activities aren't fully supported the same way running and walking are. You can log into the website and record these activities?even noting the time and duration so that Fitbit can align the activity readings with those noted exercises?but it isn't automatic. Only running, walking, and jogging work without effort.

The feature that most caught my attention, the sleep monitor, also requires you to enter time data using the online dashboard. You can tuck Fitbit into the pocket of a wristband and wear it while you sleep, and the accelerometer will watch for movement all night long. The Web application graphically shows periods when you were very still, and thus in a deep sleep and times when you moved enough to not be in a REM sleep. It also records how long it took you to fall asleep, though this data relies on you entering a precise and accurate time when you got into bed.

If you're trying to lose weight, Fitbit can be used in conjunction with another weight-management tool called Lose It!, which has both a website and smartphone app?see the review of Lose It! for iPhone (free, 3.5 stars).

When Fitbit Fits
Fitbit Ultra performed well in all my testing, doing a good job of collecting, aggregating, and displaying data across walking, running, stair-climbing, sleeping, and eating. It excels as a pedometer, but classifies only as a lightweight when measured against other fitness tracking devices.?When I spoke with Fitbit's CEO, he likened Fitbit to the Nintendo Wii?not as powerful as its competitors, but certainly less niche.?True fitness buffs will want to pay more for a device that simply does more, like show maps of their running routes based on GPS coordinates. But if you're not training for a marathon and only looking to boost your exercise and activity levels modestly, the Fitbit delivers.

Sea life 'must swim faster to survive'

Monday, November 7, 2011

Fish and other sea creatures will have to travel large distances to survive climate change, international marine scientists have warned. Sea life, particularly in the Indian Ocean, the Western and Eastern Pacific and the subarctic oceans will face growing pressures to adapt or relocate to escape extinction, according to a new study by an international team of scientists published in the journal Science.

"Our research shows that species which cannot adapt to the increasingly warm waters they will encounter under climate change will have to swim farther and faster to find a new home," says team member Professor John Pandolfi of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and The University of Queensland.

Using 50 years' data of global temperature changes since the 1960s, the researchers analysed the shifting climates and seasonal patterns on land and in the oceans to understand how this will affect life in both over the coming century.

"We examined the velocity of climate change (the geographic shifts of temperature bands over time) and the shift in seasonal temperatures for both land and sea. We found both measures were higher for the ocean at certain latitudes than on land, despite the fact that the oceans tend to warm more slowly than air over the land."

The finding has serious implications especially for marine biodiversity hotspots ? such as the famous Coral Triangle and reefs that flourish in equatorial seas, and for life in polar seas, which will come under rising pressure from other species moving in, the team says.

"Unlike land-dwelling animals, which can just move up a mountain to find a cooler place to live, a sea creature may have to migrate several hundred kilometres to find a new home where the water temperature, seasonal conditions and food supply all suit it," Prof. Pandolfi says.

Under current global warming, land animals and plants are migrating polewards at a rate of about 6 kilometres a decade ? but sea creatures may have to move several times faster to keep in touch with the water temperature and conditions that best suit them. Team member Associate Professor Anthony Richardson from the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland became interested in how species might respond to climate change during his work on a global synthesis of marine climate impacts.

He says, "We have been underestimating the likely impact of climate change on the oceans." As a general rule, it seems sea life will have to move a lot faster and farther to keep up with temperature shifts in the oceans. This applies especially to fish and marine animals living in the equatorial and subarctic seas, and poses a particular issue both for conservation and fisheries management.

Assoc. Professor Richardson explains, "There is also a complex mosaic of responses globally, related to local warming and cooling. For example, our analysis suggests that life in many areas in the Southern Ocean could move northward." However, as a rule, they are likely to be as great or greater in the sea than on land, as a result of its more uniform temperature distribution.

The migration is likely to be particularly pronounced among marine species living at or near the sea surface, or subsisting on marine plants and plankton that require sunlight ? and less so in the deep oceans.

"Also, as seas around the equator warm more quickly and sea life migrates away ? north or south ? in search of cooler water, it isn't clear what, if anything, will replace it," Prof Pandolfi adds. "No communities of organisms from even warmer regions currently exist to replace those moving out."

At the same time, sea life living close to the poles could find itself overwhelmed by marine migrants moving in from warmer regions, in search of cool water.

The team's future research will focus on how different ocean species respond to climate change and they are compiling a database on this for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Dirty Soap Recap: More Monster-in-Law Drama

This week on Dirty Soap, tension lingered between John-Paul Lavoisier and Farah Fath, while Nadia Bjorlin and Brandon Beemer finally confronted her mother.

Kelly Monaco? She made a General Hospital fan's life.

Kirsten Storms? She's still MIA. Get well girl.

We begin with Farah and JP. She is basically doing the overbearing thing, in his mind, trying to get him to change up his wardrobe and the like (although let's be honest, he could use a little help), and he's being pushed to the edge.

John-Paul Lavoisier and Farah Fath

When you tell the camera your girl "sucks the life force out of you," that's generally not a good sign for a relationship. Clearly she has a strong and difficult personality.

Brandon suggests he pick his battles, but he's got a different situation on his hands where he might want to try that. Of course, it's hard to tell off your girl's mother.

Luckily, Farah gets the hint and promises she'll try to back off JP a bit.

Nadia's mom Fary, however? That resolution is less likely to happen.

Brandon’s parents are coming for a visit, and Fary doesn't respect them ... he’s garbage and came from garbage. Brutal stuff right there, but she's a brutal individual.

Fary bails with some lame excuse, driving home the fact that she doesn't like the Beemers. They decide it's time to have a talk with Fary, but it doesn't go too well.

She accuses BB of being low class and possibly dealing drugs. Really.

Nadia, to her credit, stands up for her man in the face of this crap, even as things blow up to the point where her mom storms out and she's in tears. What a fiasco.

Just when you thought YOUR mother-in-law sucked, right guys! Yeesh!

Kelly Monaco feels bad about not being there for her BFF Lauren, who was battling cancer. She promises to make it up to her, or at least to set things right somehow.

The friends make up, and Kelly takes a leukemia patient to the General Hospital set, where she informs her that - OMG - she will be part of the show for the day.

Mikayla gets the VIP treatment, from hair and makeup and photos with Kelly. Mikayla then gets a script for the day, which involves a quick scene with Jason Cook.

For Kelly, this was a proud mama moment, and deservedly so.

Frazier severely ill with cancer, says manager (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Former heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, who earned boxing immortality after three epic fights with Muhammad Ali, is in hospice care with liver cancer, his manager said on Saturday.

"Smokin' Joe" Frazier, 67, was diagnosed with liver cancer about a month ago after meeting with more than one doctor and is now in hospice care in Philadelphia, his business and personal manager of seven years, Leslie Wolff, told Reuters.

"We are doing everything we can ... but I would be a liar if I did not tell you it is very serious," Wolff said.

Wolff said Frazier, who won the Olympic heavyweight boxing gold medal for the United States in 1964 in Tokyo and held the world heavyweight boxing crown from 1970 to 1973, was in a "very painful and serious situation".

But Wolff added: "Joe is a fighter. Joe doesn't give up."

Doctors are still exploring various medical options for Frazier, who has 11 children.

Frazier is eternally linked with Ali thanks to their trilogy of fights in the 1970s which rank among the most famous ever in the sport. Frazier won the first and Ali took the next two.

Frazier won the world heavyweight title in 1970, knocking out champion Jimmy Ellis, after Ali had been stripped of the championship in 1967 for refusing to fight in the Vietnam War due to his Muslim beliefs.

'FIGHT OF THE CENTURY'

Ali was reinstated in boxing and met Frazier on March 8, 1971 at New York's Madison Square Garden, in a bout billed as "The Fight of the Century". Frazier sent Ali to the canvas with a left hook in the 15th round. Ali got up but Frazier won by unanimous decision.

That brutal encounter left both men hospitalized and Frazier later lost his title in 1973 to the hard-hitting George Foreman.

The second Ali-Frazier fight was on January 28, 1974, again at Madison Square Garden, with Ali winning a 12-round decision.

Ali then beat Foreman to reclaim the championship and he went on to defend it in the third Frazier fight on October 1, 1975, in a fabled encounter in the Philippines known as "The Thrilla in Manila".

The two punished each other for 14 rounds, then Frazier's trainer and cornerman Eddie Futch stopped the fight before the 15th while Frazier fumed in the ring corner with one of his eyes swollen shut. Frazier never forgave Futch for giving Ali a victory by technical knockout.

Frazier, who was born in segregated South Carolina in 1944 as the youngest of 12 children, amassed a career record of 32-4-1.

He retired after a second loss to Foreman in 1976, then came out of retirement for a fight in 1981 before ending his career for good. His only losses were to Ali and Foreman.
