Twitter Rings in the New Year with a Challenge to #DrawHellboy [Art]

While some folks celebrated the advent of 2012 with a glass of champagne and an ill-advised midnight kiss, followers of The Mooks Tumblr bade farewell to 2011 by putting pen to paper (or cursor to computer) and offering their takes on the world's greatest doom-fisted paranormal investigator, tweeting them under the hashtag #drawhellboy. Today, we look forward to a Lovecraftian new year with some of our favorite Hellboy social media sketches.

The Mooks has done this Twitter superhero sketch-up once before, under hashtag #drawbatman. You can see the complete collected Hellboys over at The Mooks (via Forbidden Planet).

Israel rethinking position on prisoner swaps

Israel is rethinking its policy on prisoner swaps to avoid the kind of lopsided deals that saw Israel recently trade more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for a lone Israeli soldier.

A government-appointed panel submitted its recommendations in a secret report Thursday and details were not divulged. But Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Israel has "no choice but to overhaul the rules" now that Sgt. Gilad Schalit has been freed after five years in captivity in Gaza.

Barak told Israel Radio, "We have to get off the slippery slope we ventured on 25 years ago."

Over the past three decades, Israel has carried out a series of wildly uneven prisoner swap deals. In some cases, the freed prisoners returned to violence against Israel.

Obama scores repeat victory in Iowa Coffee Bean Caucus (Daily Caller)

Although official?results from the Iowa caucuses won?t be finalized until late Tuesday night, President Barack Obama scored an early victory Monday by winning the most coffee beans.

At the famed Hamburg Inn No. 2 restaurant in Iowa City, customers filled jars with coffee beans at the cash register in what locals have dubbed the Iowa Coffee Bean Caucus, the Press-Citizen reported.

President Obama was the big winner, with 6,442 beans. He also won the unofficial bean-poll in 2008.

Even though Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann will likely come in last Tuesday, she won the greatest support among bean-dropping diners who voted for a GOP candidate, with 1,147. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney rounded out the top three with 847 coffee beans.

The Hamburg Inn invited all of the GOP candidates to meet some of its customers, but only Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum paid the restaurant a visit.

(AP) ? Demonstrators in Peru resumed their protests on Monday against plans to develop a $4.8 billion gold mine, saying they fear the mine will harm their water supplies.

About 2,000 Peruvians joined the protest march in the northern city of Cajamarca, carrying signs reading "Let's defend our sources of water, now or never."

Anti-riot police stood guard during the protest, which ended peacefully. In early December, the government had imposed a state of emergency to restore order after a general strike and clashes with police in which dozens of people were injured.

Protesters fear the Conga mine, which would produce gold and copper as well as silver, will taint their water and affect a major aquifer. The mine is majority owned by U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp.

"I'm sure the population will keep defending its water resources," said Cajamarca state Gov. Gregorio Santos, who has helped lead the protests.

He reiterated that the protesters want a new study of the environmental impact of the mine, and are asking the government to facilitate dialogue about the issue.

Cajamarca is one of Peru's most heavily mined regions and many residents mistrust the new project because it is an extension of nearby Yanacocha mine, Latin America's largest gold mine, which is nearing the end of production. It has a history of troubled relations with neighboring farmers, ranchers and city dwellers downstream who claim it has harmed water supplies.

Newmont spokesman Omar Jabara said a thorough study of environmental impacts has already been performed and reviewed by multiple government agencies. He said the company welcomes "the government's effort to re-review" that assessment.

Jabara said the public has had ample opportunities to raise any issues about the mine in the past. "Some are using Conga today to advance their political agenda," Jabara said in an emailed statement.

Peru's economy depends heavily on mining, which accounts for 61 percent of its export income.

Newt Gingrich is down in Iowa, but with voters so unsettled he's not out

Newt Gingrich has dropped like a rock in Iowa polls, but with GOP voters there so unsettled it's premature to count him out. Forty-one percent of likely caucusgoers still might change their minds, a recent poll finds.

There?s a festive atmosphere at LJ?s Neighborhood Bar and Grill in Waterloo, Iowa, as Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista, wade through the crowd to take their spot for brief remarks and questions.

After all, it?s the evening of New Year?s Day, and the Jan. 3 caucuses are finally at hand. Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker, expresses surprise at the size of the crowd ? maybe 200 people packed into the cozy sports bar in the hometown of another GOP presidential competitor, Michele Bachmann.

?Our schedule said there would be 50 people here. You have really disrupted the schedule," Gingrich deadpans.

But Gingrich may in fact have been a tad taken aback, given that the pundits have given him up for politically dead. According to the latest polls, he?s now in fourth place, on the downside of a once-surging campaign ? from a commanding lead with 31 percent among likely Iowa caucusgoers three weeks ago to under 14 percent. Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, and Rick Santorum have passed him by.

Still, Iowans ? and a few out-of-towners visiting family for the holidays ? flock to see Gingrich. There are Democrats in the house, out for an autograph and a look-see at a historical figure; a college student home on break who plans to caucus with the Republicans on Tuesday, but may still vote for President Obama in November; caucusgoers who may vote for Gingrich or may not; and of course lots of die-hard Gingrich fans sporting Newt stickers and waving signs.

Don?t count this guy out. Now that he?s down on his luck, humbled by his crash in the polls after being carpet-bombed by negative ads, some folks here find him endearing. They appreciate the tears he shed last week when asked about his mother, who had mental problems. And over and over, they mention his time in Washington and ability to get things done.

?I like his ideas, his thoughts, his experience, and dedication,? says Donna Miller of Waterloo. ?I saw Bachmann and Romney, too, and chose Newt.?

?He?s the man with the answers,? says her husband, Ivan Miller.

Indeed, in his appearance here, Gingrich expounded on the space program, global warming, guns, taxes, energy, and the United Nations.

"President Clinton and I negotiated endlessly on welfare reform, balanced budget, and the tax cut,? he said, referring to his four years as House speaker in the 1990s. ?You have to think about country more than party or your own position. Nobody else has been as involved in change as I have in those two cycles.?

Ray's customers raise money for breast cancer patients

As part of a round-up campaign at Ray?s Food Place in Creswell, Oakridge, Pleasant Hill and Veneta, more than $8,500 has been raised for breast cancer patients.

The funds will stay local and are being donated to Willamette Valley Cancer Institute?s Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps cancer patients pay for living expenses and improve the quality of patients? lives during and after treatment.

Maria Eitrem, who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment, says funding from the Foundation has helped her pay for food, household items and utility bills, relieving the stress of covering everyday costs while on medical disability.

?Most people at our stores know someone who?s gone through breast cancer, so we wanted to keep the funds local,? says store manager Jay Payne, who oversees Ray?s Food Place in Creswell.

Payne and other store managers who were involved with the fundraising campaign will present the donation to Willamette Valley Cancer Institute this Friday.

Forever Lazy: The Greatest Infomercial Ever?

Yes, this is a real ad, seen by millions during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve the other night. Not unlike watching Clark attempting to count down the seconds until 2012, the "Forever Lazy" infomercial is awkward and unintentionally hilarious.

The ad, and product, have actually been around awhile, but never has its exposure been so great. Airing just before midnight on December 31, it helped ring in a whole new year of laziness - and comfort! - for millions nationwide. Snuggle up, people!

Basically, it's like the pajamas little kids sleep in, only it's for adults, and not for sleeping. And there's a zipper in back so you don't even have to take it off to relieve yourself.

We kid not:
