Report: NYC school employee faked daughter's death

(AP) ? A New York City school employee has lost her job over accusations she faked her daughter's death so she could take a vacation to Costa Rica.

The Daily News (http://nydn.us/wt3u0K) says a school official became suspicious of the forged death certificate. A special investigator's report says it had different fonts that were misaligned.

Court records show Joan Barnett pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in the case this fall. She was also fired from her job as a parent coordinator at the Manhattan High School of Hospitality Management.

She allegedly told school officials her daughter died in Costa Rica so she could spend 2? weeks there in March 2010.

A Costa Rican government official later confirmed the document was a fake, noting it dated from 2005.

Barnett's lawyer declined to comment.

Toshiba's Excite X10 tablet is as thin as it is tall

By Rosa Golijan

Toshiba

Toshiba's Excite X10 tablet?has been floating around the world for a while, but it is finally coming to the U.S.?? and boy, will it turn some heads.

Why? Well, mostly because it's tough to ignore the X10's thin and tall looks. The ten-inch tablet has a thickness of only 0.3 inches after all.?(Oh, and it's reasonably light as well ??about 1.18 pounds.)

My obsession with the X10's looks aside, let's talk specs.?

The X10's display ??which is covered in super tough Corning Gorilla Glass ??is backlit, offers ten-finger multi-touch support, and has a 1280 x 800 resolution.?The tablet has a Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 processor (that's 1.2 GHz of horsepower), comes in 16GB and 32GB configurations, includes a 2MP front-facing camera, has a 5MP rear-facing camera (with an LED flash), and offers an assortment of ports including Micro USB and Micro HDMI.

Oh, and there are also a gyroscope, an accelerometer and GPS capabilities as well as eCompass and ambient light sensors.

The Toshiba Excite X10 will set you back $530 if you're getting the 16Gb model and $600 if you opt for the 32GB version. It should become available in the first quarter of 2012.

Friends recall childhood cut short in Tucson shooting (Reuters)

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) ? The two best friends of the youngest person killed in a hail of bullets outside a Tucson supermarket last year recounted on Sunday how the three girls shared a secret pact to attend the same college when they were grown.

In a day filled with prayers, tributes and tears marking the anniversary of the shooting rampage that left six people dead and 13 others wounded, including Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the remembrance of 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green was one of the most poignant.

Christina's two closest friends and classmates were the final speakers to address more than 1,000 people who packed an auditorium at the University of Arizona at Tucson to hear 90 minutes of reflections honoring the victims of the attack.

Recalling the details of a childhood cut short by tragedy, Serenity Hammrick and Jamie Stone spoke of how the three girls attended cheerleading camp together, sang Hanna Montana songs together and passed idle time daydreaming.

"Sometimes we would just go to the park and lay on our backs and just chill and look at the clouds," Jamie said.

Their bonds ranged from the playground to their plans for college.

Christina, granddaughter of former Major League Baseball manager Dallas Green of the Philadelphia Phillies, joined her two pals in secretly promising each other that they would all go to the University of Arizona together, her friends said.

Serenity also remembered Christina helping her overcome her fear of playing kickball at school.

"Christina encouraged me by letting me practice with her. She wasn't afraid of boys or sports or anything," she said. "Sometimes it seemed like she was the only one on my side."

She added: "I want everyone to understand that Christina was one in a million, and she was my best friend."

Serenity recounted a special day the three girls spent swimming in a local creek and talking about their futures.

"She said something that day that I will never forget. She said, 'You aren't my friend, because you're my sister,'" Serenity recalled.

Ohio charity accused by US of Hamas ties disbands (AP)

TOLEDO, Ohio ? A charity that the government suspected of having ties to the militant Islamic group Hamas has shut down but is still negotiating a settlement with the U.S. Department of the Treasury over its frozen assets.

The filing made last week comes nearly six years after the Treasury Department essentially closed the charity's operation when it ordered U.S. banks to freeze the group's assets, saying it was funneling money to a terrorist organization.

The leaders of KindHearts for Charitable Humanitarian Development in Toledo denied being connected to any terrorist group and sued the government after it refused to say why the charity's money was frozen.

The two sides are working to finalize a settlement in the case after reaching a preliminary agreement, according to court filings over the last few months. The government expects a deal to be completed by early July.

A federal judge sided with the charity in 2009, ruling that the government violated the Constitution because it did not tell the organization why it was freezing its assets or give it a chance to respond. The judge later told the government to halt the investigation because its actions could cause KindHearts to lose its attorneys and harm its reputation.

"KindHearts not only is blindfolded, but also has its hands tied behind its back," U.S. District Judge James Carr said in his ruling.

The government argued that the judge didn't have the authority to issue an order stopping the investigation.

Carr's ruling marked the first time a federal court has said the Treasury Department should get a judge's permission before putting a hold on an organization's funds under terror-financing laws.

KindHearts attorney Fritz Byers declined to comment Monday about the charity's decision to go out of business or a potential settlement in its lawsuit with the government.

The Treasury Department in 2006 said KindHearts was connected with the Hamas-affiliated Holy Land Foundation and the al-Qaida-affiliated Global Relief Foundation. KindHearts leaders have said it is a nonprofit charitable organization, providing up to $6 million a year in humanitarian aid to the world's poor.

Consumer credit surges by most since 2001 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. consumer credit surged 10 percent in November, its biggest jump in a decade in a positive signal for the economy as consumers tapped their credit cards and the government doled out more student loans.

Outstanding consumer credit increased by $20.37 billion during the month, the Federal Reserve said on Monday. That was the biggest gain since November 2001 and nearly three times the median forecast in a Reuters poll.

Revolving credit, which mostly measures credit-card use, rose $5.60 billion, a third straight monthly increase.

"Credit growth is a positive sign for the recovery in that it signals increasing demand and willingness to spend," said Paul Edelstein, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Edelstein said, however, that there was a risk the credit growth could be a sign that chronic unemployment was leading more people to turn to credit to fund necessary expenditures.

The government said late last month that consumer spending edged up just 0.2 percent in November, with households cutting back on their saving.

JPMorgan economist Daniel Silver said the increase in credit card borrowing might have been aided by some big banks imposing new fees on debit card use. It "may have pushed people to favor credit cards over debit cards," he said.

The increase in consumer credit was the 13th in 14 months and the biggest jump since creditors boosted lending in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.

Nonrevolving credit, which includes student and auto loans, rose a seasonally adjusted $14.78 billion in November.

Government lending to students appeared to be a significant factor in the increase, rising $6.4 billion. Unlike the broader credit gauges, the student lending data is not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations.

Over the 12 months through November, government loans to students rose 31.9 percent, outperforming any other kind of non-revolving loans tracked by the Fed, including those made by commercial banks.

However, there are some signs the surge in student lending registered since the last recession is tapering off. Year-over-year increases in student lending peaked at 78 percent in September 2010 and have trended lower since then.

Will Kryder: Dispatches From The Campaign Trail: Retail Politics in New Hampshire

Over a 24-hour period in New Hampshire I observed firsthand what modern "retail politics" looks like: a Gingrich sponsored Town Hall in Littleton, a Santorum sporting store walk-through in Jaffrey and a Ron Paul mega-rally in Nashua.

In the first two cases the majority of attendees seemed to be press, lending the events a surreal emptiness - a building full of reporters from around the world listening to a candidate speechify about his love for the Granite State. In Littleton, Gingrich appeared to be going through the motions, repeating his now oft-cited promise to challenge Obama to a series of Lincoln-Douglas debates with the identical cadence and language he was using a month ago in Iowa. He charged that Obama's campaign motto should be changed from "We can't wait" to "We can't wait...to shred the U.S. Constitution." But, tellingly, the crowd of supporters was small enough that he had enough time to individually speak with every one of them following the speech.

The press/supporter ratio was even more unbalanced at Pelletier's Sports Shop in Jaffrey, a hamlet in southwest New Hampshire, where Rick Santorum waded through a throng of reporters while talking gun rights.

"The Second Amendment is there to protect the first!" he asserted, trying to establish himself as the "values" candidate in the race. Yet, it was genuinely difficult to find an actual Santorum supporter amid the excitement. Even Charles Pelletier, the 64 year-old owner of the store hosting the event, told me that he was undecided.

Indecision was not a factor at the Ron Paul "welcome rally" yesterday in southern New Hampshire. About 650 people filled a hanger at the Nashua Airport. (One twitter follower, doubting my estimate, told me I "must have dropped a zero.") Paul was introduced by his son, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, and delivered a terse 15-minute speech to the enthusiastic crowd.

Demographically speaking, the crowd contrasted starkly to those with whom I'd spoken at the Gingrich and Santorum events. Entirely young and mostly white, they ranged from clean-cut young coastal types - one was wearing a Columbia University sweatshirt - to those presenting a more bohemian, vaguely hipster, anti-establishment vibe.

For his part, Paul didn't bowdlerize his libertarian message, instead highlighting many of the positions that distinguish him from his Republican counterparts. He avoided mentioning Obama by name, choosing instead to excoriate government in any form. His central leitmotifs were foreign policy - "Strong national defense, mind our own business, take care of ourselves!" - and a promise to repeal the Patriot Act, which generated one of the most forceful cheers from the crowd.

Few of the supporters I spoke to identified as Republican. Most preferred Independent or Libertarian, and the "anybody but Obama" mentality common to GOP voters was markedly absent. When I pressed attendees about whom they would vote for in a hypothetical general election between Romney and Obama, neither option seemed appealing, they replied.

Said one, after languishing for a moment: "Don't make me choose."
