Play SNES Games online with friends

Back in the days when Nintendo and Sega ruled the console gaming world, I used to play all kinds of SNES games with friends. I remember well how we played games like Super Mario World, Mario Kart or Donkey Kong Country with each other on a single system. It was lots of fun, not because the games had super shiny graphics and all, but because game design, replayability and the overall experience was better than anything you get today.

While you can buy SNES games as virtual console games for Nintendo Wii or Wii U, I think that Nintendo failed to tap into the online gaming market. Yes, the Wii has Internet play and all, but as far as I know, you can?t really fire up Super Mario World on the system to play the game with a friend in another apartment, town or even continent.

I can name more than ten games out of my head that I?d like to play with friends online but it seems that this is not possible right now.

Enter SNESbox. I discovered the service a while ago and was not really sure if I should write about it as there is a high chance that it will get pulled if Nintendo finds out about it. Then again, Nintendo may be clever this time and broker a deal with the service instead.

So, SNESbox provides you online access to 1861 Nintendo SNES games that you can play on the site either with a keyboard or a gamepad that you connect to your computer. What makes this service special is that you can play games with a friend together. It provides you with online multiplayer? for all the best ? English ? SNES games.

The site offers all classic SNES games, from Super Mario World and Kart over Mortal Kombat and Donkey Kong to Contra and Zelda. Not all games are multiplayer games, and the selection of single player games is excellent as well. I have already mentioned Zelda, but you also get access to excellent games like Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Earthbound, all Final Fantasy games or Super Star Wars.

To play a game simply click on it. It takes a couple of seconds to load the emulator and game. First thing you see is the selection menu where you can select to play alone or with a friend via the Internet. If you select the multiplayer option, a custom url is generated that you need to provide your friend with. You can send it via email, chat or any other form of communication that you have available.? The game then waits for your friend to load the link before it starts. Single and multiplayer are from here on out identical again.

First time users need to configure the keyboard setup first before they can play. A click on load defaults here sets the keys to the defaults, which means you move with WASD and control the A,B,X and Y buttons with K,J,I and U. Select is set to T and Start to space. It is highly recommended to connect a gamepad to the PC though as it improves game play significantly.

play snes games online multiplayer

Games play in a small frame in the browser window by default. A fullscreen mode is available, but only if you connect a gamepad to the computer. Before you do that, you need to download a small file and run it on your computer. I have not tested that yet as I never tried to connect a pad to the PC before.

If you want to play with a friend, you have to select the multiplayer game mode the game provides you with. You share a single screen so that you always see what your friend is up to and vice versa. I have not tried Mario Kart yet but suppose it will use the split screen technique for multiplayer just like the original games did.

Note that saving games in the game itself does not appear to be working. You can however save the state of the game if you create an account with the site. When you do, that option becomes available at the bottom of the screen when you move the mouse over it.

For some games, saving is essential as you can?t really play them in one go.? To create an account click on the save game state icon when you play a game and then on the sign up link that appears next to sign in. Just enter a username, password and email address and you are good to go.

When you load a game that you saved previously, you get the option to load the game?s saved state instead to continue where you stopped playing the last time. Keep in mind that you only get one saved state per game.

A click on the settings button at the top opens a nav bar with a search option. If you are looking for a particular game, use it to find it.

secret of mana

What more? If you are more the NES kind of player, you can switch to the system at the top to play NES games online instead. Game selection is great and the two player over Internet option is available for these kind of games as well.

Emulation for the most part is great and fluent. When I tried Donkey Kong with a friend we heard a nerve wreaking sound every now and then which was not there in the original games. Our solution was to reduce the volume of the game to reduce its impact. Not a big problem as we talked a lot while playing anyway.

SNESbox provides you with the best SNES multiplayer gaming experience that you can get. While it is the online mode that sets it apart from other sites that let you play Super Nintendo games on the Internet, its excellent selection of games and ease of use make it the top destination for all things SNES and NES.

Now, I only wish the developers would create a Genesisbox, Amigabox and C-64box as well.

In churches and stadiums, Americans mourn shooting victims

Jessica Rinaldi / Reuters

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady wears a decal on his helmet Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012, in tribute to the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 8:26 p.m. ET: Americans came together in the thousands Sunday to honor the memories of the 26 victims of the shootings at a Connecticut High School.

This Sunday was Gaudete Sunday, the Advent observance of joy and celebration, but in churches and cathedrals across the country, the message was one of reassurance and comfort for the distressed and the afflicted.

Hundreds of people signed a book of condolences and prayed special prayers Sunday morning at Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke, Mass.

"I lost a little child once, just a matter of days old, and that's still with me although it's 50 years later," Paula Brunault of Holyoke told NBC station WWLP of Springfield, Mass.

"I just know that prayers surround the people, really and truly. It's the best thing we can do for them," she said.

The Rev. Scott Kubinski, pastor of Christ the Redeemer Parish in the Elmira, N.Y., area, denied that the shootings were the will of God. Instead, he told parishioners at St. Casimir's Catholic Church, it was the fruit of the free will that God allows people to have, NBC station WETM of Elmira reported.

"God isn't happy about it, but God is with us through it all, giving us strength," he said. "That's why people do turn to faith in times of sadness and why they turn to prayer."

More than 150 chaplains of the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy of Sacramento, Calif., dressed in full police uniform Sunday and visited churches, restaurants and shopping malls to offer hope.

At Bayside Church, an Evangelical Covenant megachurch in Roseville, Calif., Senior Chaplain Mindi Russell told thousands of families who packed inside to pray for the victims and families of Friday's massacre.

Russell said it was understandable that children were asking why the shooting happened and why so many people were killed.?

As families hugged one another and prayed for the violence to end, Russell reassured the congregation that while there are bad people in the world, there are many more good people, NBC station KCRA of Sacramento reported.

NFL teams also honored the shooting victims, lowering flags to half-staff ?and observing a moment of silence before all of Sunday's games. Some teams brought young children onto the field, and players ? many of them visibly moved ? stood hand in hand with them.

The New England Patriots ? whose owner, Robert Kraft, also owns a box company that has a factory less than a mile from Sandy Hook Elementary School ? were wearing black-ribbon logos on their helmets for Sunday night's game against the San Francisco 49ers.?

The Patriots also planned to fire 26 white flares ? one for each of the victims ? at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

The New York Giants wore decals bearing the letters SHES ? standing for Sandy Hook Elementary School ? on their helmets Sunday for their game in Atlanta against the Falcons. Coach Tom Coughlin told NFL.com that his team had been "very, very much affected" by the shootings.

The New York Jets were to wear the same decal Monday night for their game against the Tennessee Titans.

The Truth About Rent-to-Own Real Estate | Consumer Media Network

It?s not easy to buy a home in the U.S. these days. In 2010, Zillow estimated that a third of Americans didn?t qualify for home loans because of their credit. Two years later, it?s still nearly impossible for someone with a low credit score to buy a house. Americans with average credit scores don?t have it much easier. The ridiculously high mortgage rates they?re offered make investing in real estate seem impractical. Advertisements for 15-year mortgages with 3% interest rates are fixtures on real estate sites, but only a small percentage of people with really, really good credit qualify for such low rates.

Mortgage lenders are justified in being cautious. America hasn?t recovered from the subprime mortgage crisis, which was a result of a blatant lack of discretion on the part of everyone involved in real estate transactions. Six years ago, lenders didn?t blink an eye before handing over the keys to a McMansion. Now they pore over credit histories and financial statements, looking for reasons to turn down potential homebuyers.

Until lenders strike a balance between excessive caution and recklessness, people with everyday credit scores will have to stomach high interest rates or put off buying homes until their credit scores improve. A minority of potential homebuyers may also consider options like rent-to-own real estate.

If you?ve ever perused the real estate section on sites like craigslist, you?ve probably seen advertisements for rent-to-own housing. These advertisements often promise to put you on the fast track to owning your own home, regardless of your credit score.

How rent-to-own real estate works is relatively simple on the surface. You pay an option fee of a few thousand dollars and agree to pay a seller rent for a certain number of months, while you live in the home that?s for sale. You and the seller agree on a selling price for the home, which you expect to eventually take out a mortgage to pay. The rent you pay each month is a little bit more than what you would pay for a rental property. This is because a portion of the monthly rent for a rent-to-own property goes toward a down payment.

If everything goes according to plan, you end up with a nice down payment set aside when it comes time to apply for a mortgage to buy the home. The catch is that there?s no guarantee you?ll get approved for a mortgage with a reasonable interest rate or get approved for a mortgage at all, even after dutifully paying inflated rent for several months.

The major pitfall of rent-to-own real estate is that sellers want to make a profit. Oftentimes, the way they can make the biggest profit costs buyers.

?Rent-to-own ties up properties. If a rent-to-own house goes up in value before it?s sold, it?s not good for the seller,? said Richard Schulman, a real estate agent in Los Angeles. ?Sellers usually only enter into rent-to-own arrangements when they think they can profit from them.?

Sellers make the most money off of rent-to-own arrangements when plans fall through and they get to keep your down payment and option fee.

?After buyers pay rent for the pre-established number of months, they still have to apply for loans. They?re not always approved. When they?re not approved, they don?t get their down payments or option fees back. The sellers keep the money. A lot of times sellers do rent-to-own in low-income neighborhoods where they know buyers won?t get approved for loans,? Schulman said.

You can also lose your down payment and option fee if you violate any of the terms of your contract with a seller. Something as simple as paying rent a few days late could cost you your money and future home. On top of that, if a seller loses the home because he or she neglected to make mortgage payments on it, you could lose out on the home too.

Signing a contract to rent-to-own a home doesn?t mean you?re signing a contract that guarantees you home ownership, and unscrupulous sellers are aware of this. Rent-to-own real estate doesn?t always end badly for buyers, though.

According to Schulman, ?There are certainly legitimate rent-to-own operations and honest sellers. If someone has poor credit now but believes they will qualify for financing in the future, it could be a great opportunity. What matters is being able to get financing to close the transaction.?

Being able to spot and steer clear of unscrupulous sellers will help you avoid rent-to-own disasters. As with most things, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If someone tells you your credit and financial standing will have no bearing on whether or not you get approved for a mortgage in the end, be wary.

There are a number of examples of rent-to-own scams on sites like scam.com and ripoffreport.com. Make sure you search for rent-to-own real estate companies on these watchdog sites before you sign any paperwork, and trust your instincts.

?When someone calls me and asks about renting-to-own, I ask them if they think they?ll be able to qualify for a mortgage in the near future. If they don?t think they will, I recommend they take the time to build up their credit and eventually purchase a home the traditional way,? Schulman said.

Before you invest in rent-to-own real estate, remember that there?s no quick fix for a low credit score. Building up your credit often takes time. Luckily, the house of your dreams will be worth the wait.

Your Cover Letter, Better in 4 Steps

Cover letters are often the most difficult part of initially applying to a job. This is especially true for those of you who are recent grads or are otherwise relatively new to the job market. It can be hard to pin down your accomplishments and why you are a perfect fit for the job without overlapping too much with your resume. As a former hiring manager, I can say that cover letter often make or break your chances at an interview, so the cover letter is something you want to pay lots of attention to. Here are some basic steps for writing the best cover letter possible:

1.????? Read the job ad ten times over right before writing your first draft.

This step is absolutely instrumental, because most hiring managers, at least during the first round of quickly overviewing applications, will first skim cover letters to determine how closely they match stated job requirements and skills. By reading the job ad over and over again, you?ll have those key words in your head as you write.

2.????? Explain what it is that may set you apart from other candidates.

For any given job opening, you can bet your bottom dollar that hundreds of other candidates are applying for the same position, too. As a hiring manager, part of my job was to simply weed out candidates until I had a good twenty applications in front of me. Afterwards, it was all a matter of choosing the standouts. It?s important to realize that, no matter how much experience and how many skills you have, there are other that are just as qualified or more qualified than you. In the cover letter, you have your chance to explain why you would be better for the job than someone else with the same background.

3.????? Demonstrate that you know something about the company.

This is one of the best ways to set yourself apart from the other candidates. When I was a hiring manager, I was very surprised by how rare it was for candidates to express interest in the company in a very detailed and knowledgeable way. When I did see this level of interest and knowledge, I immediately put the application in the ?interview pile.? Of course, I don?t mean to say that you should inordinately suck up or just look at the company website very quickly. Rather, show a commitment by going the extra mile to do some research, and explain in your cover letter how the company?s values and motivations match up with yours.

4.????? Keep your paragraphs short and tight. Use an inverted pyramid to structure your cover letter.

Write your cover letter with the knowledge that it will be read over very quickly. In most cases, as noted earlier, it will only be skimmed at first. Keeping your paragraphs short and tight will make the hiring manager more eager to read your cover letter. Structure your cover letter the way reporters structure news articles?the most important and compelling information at the top, and go from there in descending order with additional details.

Cover letters take lots of time and practice to get them right. Don?t send in your first draft of your cover letter. Read it over and over again, and take out what?s not important. Show it to other colleagues and professionals who can give you additional advice. Good luck!

Lights in lower Manhattan, misery in outer regions

NEW YORK (AP) ? The lights were back on Saturday in lower Manhattan, prompting screams of sweet relief from residents who had been plunged into darkness for nearly five days by Superstorm Sandy. But that joy contrasted with deepening resentment in the city's outer boroughs and suburbs over a continued lack of power and maddening gas shortages.

Adding to the misery of those without power, heat or gasoline were dipping temperatures. Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged older residents without heat to move to shelters and said 25,000 blankets were being distributed across the city.

"We're New Yorkers, and we're going to get through it," the mayor said. "But I don't want anyone to think we're out of the woods."

Bloomberg also said that resolving gas shortages could take days. Lines snaked around gas stations for many blocks all over the stricken region, including northern New Jersey, where Gov. Chris Christie imposed rationing that recalled the worst days of fuel shortages of the 1970s.

Perhaps nowhere was the scene more confused than at a refueling station in Brooklyn, where the National Guard gave out free gas ? an effort to alleviate the situation. There, a mass of honking cars, desperate drivers and people on foot, carrying containers from empty bleach bottles to five-gallon Poland Spring water jugs, was just the latest testament to the misery unleashed by Sandy.

"It's chaos; it's pandemonium out here," said Chris Damon, who had been waiting for 3? hours at the site and had circled the block five times. "It seems like nobody has any answers."

Added Damon: "I feel like a victim of Hurricane Katrina. I never thought it could happen here in New York, but it's happened."

Damon, 42, had already been displaced to Brooklyn from his home in Queens, where he still lacked power, as did millions outside Manhattan ? from Staten Island, the hardest-hit borough, to Westchester County and other suburban areas.

Domingo Isasi, waiting in a gas line on Staten Island, minced no words about the divide he perceived between Manhattan and the outer boroughs.

"The priorities are showing, simply by the fact that Manhattan got their power back," he said, adding that Staten Islanders are used to being lower on the list. "We're the bastard kids who keep getting slapped in the head and told to shut up," he said.

At a gas giveaway station in Queens, the scene was calmer but not happier. More than 400 cars stretched for more than a dozen blocks, with one tanker filling cars one at a time. A police car pulled alongside a car about 250th in line, and officers told the driver they hoped there would still be gas by the time he got there.

The 5,000-gallon trucks from the Defense Department had been dispatched to five locations around the New York City metropolitan area. "Do not panic. I know there is anxiety about fuel," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Hours later, after the long lines formed, state officials said the public should stay away from the refueling stations until emergency responders got their gas. National Guard Col. Richard Goldenberg added, however, that those who were already at the distribution sites would not be turned away.

Ten people were arrested at gas stations on Friday in various disputes over line jumping, police said. The police presence where there were gas lines was increased on Saturday. Still, there was one arrest for disorderly conduct at the armory in Brooklyn, where free gasoline was being distributed.

And fears about crime, especially at night in darkened neighborhoods, persisted. Officers in the Midland Beach section of Staten Island early Saturday saw a man in a Red Cross jacket checking the front doors of unoccupied houses and arrested him for burglary.

Gas rationing went into effect at noon in 12 counties of northern New Jersey, where police enforced rules to allow only motorists with odd-numbered license plates to refuel. Those with even-numbered plates would get their turn Sunday.

Jessica Tisdale, of Totowa, waited in her Mercedes SUV for 40 minutes at a gas station in Jersey City, but didn't quite understand the system and was ordered to pull away because of her even-numbered plate.

"Is it the number or the letter?" she asked around 12:10 p.m. "I don't think it's fair. I've been in the line since before noon. ...There's no clarity." The officer who waved her out of line threw up his hands and shrugged.

At an Exxon station in Wall, N.J., Kathryn Davidson, who had an even-numbered plate, got gas anyway by beating the noon deadline.

"How are people supposed to know?" said Davidson, 53, who said it reminded her of the 1970s, when a similar plan was in place.

President Barack Obama visited the headquarters of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for an update on recovery efforts and said: "There's nothing more important than us getting this right."

He cited the need to restore power; pump out water, particularly from electric substations; ensure that basic needs are addressed; remove debris; and get federal resources in place to help transportation systems come back on line.

More than 2.6 million people remained without power in several states after Sandy came ashore Monday night.

About 900,000 people still didn't have electricity in the New York metropolitan area, including about 550,000 on Long Island, Cuomo said. About 80 percent of New York City's subway service has been restored, he added.

The restoration of power beat the sunrise Saturday in the West Village, though just barely. Electricity arrived at 4:23 a.m., said Adam Greene, owner of Snack Taverna, a popular eatery.

"This morning, I took a really long, hot shower," he said.

Greene said one woman had stopped in Saturday to drop off $10 for the staff, saying she regretted she didn't have enough cash to tip adequately during the blackout.

He joked that 28th Street, above which had power, was like "Checkpoint Charlie."

"You crossed 28th Street and people were living a comfortable life," Greene said. "Down here it was dark and cold."

Throughout the West Village, people were emerging from their hibernation, happy to regain their footing. Stores started to reopen. Signs at a Whole Foods Market promised that fresh meat and poultry and baked goods would return Sunday.

Aida Padilla was thrilled that the power at her large housing authority complex in Chelsea had returned late Friday. "Thank God," said Padilla, 75. "I screamed and I put the lights on. Everybody was screaming. It was better than New Year's."

Asked about whether she had heat, she replied, "Hot and cold water and heat! Thank God, Jesus!"

Some lower Manhattan residents, however, were still without steam heat.

Michael Cornelison, 42, who works in IT, was glad power was back in his downtown apartment. But he said he had taken advantage of the darkness, too.

"It was nice to disconnect this week," Cornelison said. "I slept a lot." He added that he'd watched movies on his laptop, including "Hurricane in the Bayou."

New York City's parks reopened Saturday, and with Sunday's New York City Marathon canceled, many of the runners who had come to town for the race worked out their frustrations with a jog through Central Park, the site of the finish line that won't be used.

Others scrambled to rebook return flights.

Bloomberg reversed himself Friday and yielded to mounting criticism about running the race, which starts on hard-hit Staten Island and wends through all five of the city's boroughs.

In his first comments since canceling the marathon, Bloomberg said he'd fought to keep it going but the controversy was becoming "so divisive" and too much of a distraction.

"I still think that we had the resources to do both, and that we want people to be able to take a break and that sort of thing. ... It's a big part of our economy," Bloomberg told WCBS-TV during a visit to Queens. As he spoke, he was met by catcalls from residents angry about the city's response to the storm.

Many runners understood the decision, especially with the death toll from the storm at 106, including 40 in New York City. The destruction and power outages made many New Yorkers recoil at the idea of police protecting a foot race and evicting storm victims from hotels to make way for runners. More than half of the 40,000 runners were from out of town.

Some runners, though, vowed to never enter New York again. Pia Nielsen, who flew in from Copenhagen, said city and race officials would have to regain her trust.

But Lucy Marquez said she would come back, even as tears filled her eyes at the thought of the three young children she left at home in Mexico to run in her first marathon ? a race her father competed in 12 years ago.

"Shock. Denial. Rage," she said. "I love New York City. This is the marathon I want to run."
