Your Child's Cellphone; a Privilege or a Lifeline?

Despite Mayor Bloomberg?s ban on cellphones in NYC Public Schools, my 10 year-old daughters carry a cellphone to school every day. Like hundreds of thousands of other NYC students, they keep them in their backpacks turned off during the school day, and then activate them after school so they can text and call me when they arrive at their various after school activities. It?s an expectation every parent has at this point ? the ability to get in touch with their child no matter where they are.

After the Sandy Hook school tragedy I began to think about how the various communication procedures in place at NYC public schools would work in an emergency situation. You?d think that after 9/11 all of this would be worked out, but 13 years ago when these plans were devised, cellphones were not common in schools, and smartphones didn't even exist. And yet, we are still operating as if cellphones and tablets are privileges, and not tools for aiding and helping in these types of situations. System wide emergency alerts are standard, but if all cellphones are shut off, or stored off campus, they are useless.

SEE ALSO: Does Your Cellphone Make You Safer?

If my daughters were in an emergency situation I would want to know they had their cellphone for communication. If children were moved to a different location it would obviously be much faster for them to be able to contact their parent themselves, rather than rely on an administrator or teacher to go through a class list ? if they even have access to that list where they are.

The first thing I did was put all family contact info on my daughters? phones. For children with allergies and other medical issues, having that information accessible on a smartphone could make everything easier, and safer. We saw during Superstorm Sandy what happened when elderly people had to be evacuated, but their physical charts couldn't move with them. In this day and age that seems both unacceptable and very easy to fix.

SEE ALSO: How Schools Communicate With Parents During a Crisis

As a parent I admit, I want to know that I can reach my child easily and not have to jump through hoops to do it ? or wait for my phone to
ring. I also want to know that they will have all the info they need, or that a first responder would need to help them, right on their person if possible. And in a worse case scenario like a school shooting, I want to know they can send a text message to officials or to me, to alert them of danger or their hiding location.

I know cellphones can be a distraction, or worse a tool for cheating, but we need to have a real discussion about how these computers in the palm of our kids' hands should also be a part of any meaningful and effective emergency plan.

Does your child have a cellphone? Does your school and family have an emergency plan? Let us know how you think technology and
cellphones could help in an emergency.

Facebook pauses efforts to launch ad network

Facebook pauses efforts to launch ad network

Remember that mobile ad network that Facebook ushered into beta around three months ago? Don't look for it to escape anytime soon. Per a new report from AllThingsD, spokesman Brandon McCormick has stated the following: "We are pausing our mobile ads test off of Facebook. While the results we have seen and the feedback from partners has been positive, our focus is on scaling ads in mobile news feed before ads off of Facebook. We have learned a lot from this test that will be useful in the future."

For those unaware, the general goal was for Facebook to place its own ads on other developer's mobile apps, and given the wealth of data it has on a billion or so users, you'd think said plan was pretty sound. Of course, gearing up to launch something to rival Google's AdSense network is no small feat, and we're left to assume that Facebook would rather wait and get it right than launch a subpar alternative. There's no word yet on when the pause button will be pressed once more, but you can probably assume it won't be until Q1 2013 at the earliest.

Ambassador: China bullish on Thai ties

The Chinese ambassador says his country views Thailand as an Asean logistics hub, as evidenced by continued firm commitments from Chinese construction giants to bid for the high-speed train project.

A mock-up cover of the People?s Daily Overseas Edition, a monthly bilingual publication, is shown at yesterday?s launch.

"The centre of logistics in Asean is Thailand, not any other country," Guan Mu said yesterday.

Speaking at the launch of the People's Daily Overseas Edition, a monthly bilingual publication, the ambassador said Chinese companies are eager to participate in the bidding for the construction of high-speed railway lines in Thailand, expected to begin in late 2013.

Mr Guan said China is confident it will be selected in the bidding for the Chiang Mai line, the first of two lines expected to be built.

Apart from being at the forefront of high-speed rail technology, Chinese companies offer a much faster construction process at a 40% lower cost compared with German or Japanese firms.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Yong Suksudprasert, president of the Thai-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, said at least 10 large Chinese firms have expressed interest in submitting bids.

Any investment will be in the form of a joint venture with Thai construction companies, he said.

Mr Yong said Chinese subcontractors have long had a presence here under large Thai firms.

The Airport Rail Link was partly built by Chinese firms.

Chinese investment in Thailand has increased significantly in recent years, doubling this year alone, said Mr Yong.

It goes primarily to the tourism, banking, retail and heavy industry sectors including information technology and automobiles.

"China has become the world's largest car producer and is even looking at a production base here," said Mr Yong.

Chinese companies have also been active in acquiring land for hotels in Bangkok and are now looking farther afield to Chiang Mai.

"The ties between China and Thailand are unbreakable. They include everything from culture to trade," said Mr Yong, adding that Chinese are fond of Thailand for its welcoming environment compared with Japan and the EU.

Thailand and China earlier agreed to cooperate on construction of two high-speed rail lines linking the countries following a visit by Xi Jinping, the new Communist Party chief, here at the end of last year.

Mr Guan said that during Mr Xi's visit, the two countries agreed to cooperate on four key issues including the high-speed rail lines.

Another cooperation agreed to was water management including constructions to prevent a recurrence of the severe flooding seen during last year's crisis.

Third was cooperation on renewable energy, in which China is a research leader.

Fourth covered education and human resource development, particularly student exchanges.

McIlroy wins US golf writers' award

Rory McIlroy is the near unanimous choice as the best male player by the Golf Writers Association of America.

McIlroy received 190 out of the 194 votes cast by GWAA members. Three votes went to FedEx Cup champion Brandt Snedeker, and the other went to Tiger Woods. McIlroy previously won player of the year awards from the PGA Tour, European Tour, PGA of America and British-based Association of Golf Writers.

The GWAA said Wednesday that Stacy Lewis was voted best female player with 79 percent of the vote, while double major winner Roger Chapman won the senior player award with 60 percent of the vote.

This is the fourth time in the last five years that the GWAA award has gone to a European player.

Notre Dame football: Alabama's Saban used to answering questions about his future

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- It must be December because Alabama is preparing for a national title game and Nick Saban's future is a popular topic.

The second-ranked Crimson Tide started practicing Tuesday for the BCS championship game Jan. 7 against No. 1 Notre Dame with All-America center Barrett Jones on the mend and Saban laughing off rumors about returning to the NFL.

"We're really, really pleased and happy to be here," the former Miami Dolphins coach said Tuesday after the first bowl practice. "We've been able to accomplish a lot. But like I've talked about before, this is a work in progress all the time. You've got to stay focused on the process to try to continue to make the next game the most important game, the next season the most important season, developing the team every year.

"We certainly look forward to those challenges. I'm not sure, regardless of what I say, that anybody believes what I say because I say it all the time. This is what we're happy doing. This is what we like to do. But nobody really believes that. So, you know, maybe it doesn't matter. I don't know what I have to say or do, but it's kind of funny to me," he said.

Saban and Alabama will try to capture their third national title in four years.

The Tide will practice five days before taking a three-day break for Christmas.

Jones won't practice until after the team returns after spraining his left foot in the first quarter of the Southeastern Conference championship game against Georgia, a 32-28 victory that ended with the Bulldogs on Alabama's 5-yard line.

"I will be playing in the game," said Jones, who won the Rimington Award as the nation's top center a year after claiming the Outland Trophy while playing left tackle.

Wide receiver Kenny Bell has been cleared to do some work after recovering from a broken leg. He was expected to be out 5-6 weeks after surgery to repair the injury sustained against Auburn on Nov. 24.

"How he does, how he manages, what his tolerance is to activity will be determined as we go," Saban said. "I can't make a call as to whether he'll play in the game or not at this juncture."

As usual, the Tide is applying Saban's back to basics philosophy for the first few days of practice before focusing heavily on Notre Dame.

Jones thinks the fact that most players went through the drill in 2011 and veterans like him were part of the 2009 championship team is "overrated" in getting ready for this one.

"The fact that Alabama has been in the national championship before, that's not going to help us once the ball is snapped," Jones said. "It's not going to be who is the more experienced fighter. It's going to be who fights the better fight that night. Certainly, Coach has been through this and has a specific formula of how to handle long layoffs. As players, we trust that formula."

It worked in a 37-21 win over Texas in Pasadena, Calif., and a 21-0 victory over LSU in New Orleans.

The NFL question hasn't been resolved for three All-Americans -- linebacker C.J. Mosley, cornerback Dee Milliner and right tackle D.J. Fluker -- or tailback Eddie Lacy. Quarterback AJ McCarron already has said he'll be back next year.

Saban said the answer for the others probably won't come before the title game.

"We always have that issue here with several guys," he said. "We have several more guys that will have to make that decision. We don't press guys to make the decision. Some guys are more driven to do it than others.

"We're certainly pleased and happy to have AJ back. I think AJ's decision was based on the fact that with the quarterbacks, if you're not going to be one of the very, very top picks, one of the first few guys picked in the draft, where they're going to make an investment of you being the guy ... it's very difficult to develop because you don't get to play very much."

Seems to me that Apple are running scared of samsung !!? It's not about copying it's about competition, they don't like the fact that samsung are cheaper, while producing products of equal standard or in some cases better.

?

If Samsung can purchase the parts for their equipment at a cheaper rate than good luck to them.

?

Apple on the other hand charge a fortune for their products while paying their workers in china pitance, this was proved when there were strikes at the complex.

I hate Apple and the below standard products they release.

What Apple seems to forget is that they have copied in the past, their operating system was a blatant copy of one by another company!

I would'nt give apple a groat it's a company run buy people who still live in?the world of playgrounds

" im gonna tell teacher you stole my ball" for heavens sake GROW UP.

basically i dont like apple - i prefer oranges.

Apple have good build quality but they act like children over there patents and need to grow up!

Same old Apple. I used to have an imac and an iphone, got rid of them both because Apple do not want there products to be compatible with other operating systems, so that if?someone wants to contact a friend?who has an Apple product, apart from making a phone call, you also have to have an Apple product. I've now got Android hardware that is compatible and user friendly with other models than my own.?Bye Bye Apple

Apple is the devil in company form. In saying that I would happily accept an ipad if someone gave it too me. I'd defend to the hills. But would I buy one?....with money?........Don't think so

The core operating system of Apple and Samsung are as different as chalk and cheese. Yes they may look similar and do similar things but they are different. It is a bit like Windows and Linux. Linux can be made to look like Windows, it can even run Windows applications but it is not Windows.

?

That aside I would not buy an Apple device because I don't like being controlled by a third party when it comes to things like my own music etc like?not having to rip it in to ITunes then download it. Android devices are so much simpler and let you have total control, you just plug your phone in to your computer and drag the music across.

?

All these court cases are in fact driving people away from buying Apple devices because it shows the child?like mentality of Apple.

apple are just trying to protect their technology once that is copied every tom dick and harry will be at it.

?

Apple will never sell as many units as Samsung, the same way Ferrari will never sell more units than Ford.?

Samsung is a budget brand for people that don't have the money for the superior Apple product. Look at the poor materials Samsung use compared to the quality of any Apple product.

Samsung will never have the same high end image of Apple.
