James' season on the brink in Boston _ again

(AP) ? LeBron James appreciates the irony.

Matching up against the Boston Celtics, on the road, with the season on the line. He faced it in 2008 and lost. He faced it in 2010 and lost, removing his Cleveland Cavaliers jersey for the final time as he left the floor that night.

And now in a championship-or-bust season for the Miami Heat, James heads back to Boston for another win-or-else game.

"It is fitting," James said.

The Celtics lead the Heat 3-2 in the Eastern Conference finals, and on Thursday night will look to clinch a third trip in five years to the NBA finals. If they succeed in Game 6 ? or Game 7, if it comes to that ? all three of those most recent Boston trips to the title round would come at James' expense.

His first five games at Boston resulted in three wins. His 19 games there since have also resulted in three wins.

No team, maybe no other building, has befuddled James as much as the Celtics and the arena they call home. He's had a 45-point effort there in a loss, a 42-point effort there in a loss, a 27-point, 19-rebound, 10-assist effort there in a loss. Another loss on Thursday, and his ninth season will end as the previous eight did ? without a championship.

"I know how much pain this team has given me over the years," James said. "So I guess it's only right that we would be going up there in an elimination game. In order for us to keep our season going, we've got to win in their building. So that's what it's about."

It's no secret that the expectation ? both internally and externally ? for the Heat is to win championships. That's what James famously vowed to get when he came to Miami in July 2010, and after losing in last season's finals to Dallas, it's been the only goal for the Heat in what the team has steadfastly referred to as a no-excuse season.

James won his third MVP award this season. He's averaging 29.9 points in the playoffs, six points better than his pace from a year ago and one-tenth of a point away from Kobe Bryant for the league's postseason lead in that department. And if Miami loses on Thursday night, the Heat season ? and James' ? will go down in most circles as a failure.

"We have to do this together," Heat forward Chris Bosh said. "He's going to do what he's supposed to do, and we're going to do what we're supposed to do. We're going to do it together. We live and die together. You can't just single him out. People have to stop doing that. It's a team sport. If he performs, he's going to perform, and he's going to do his job."

Even with the Heat down in the series after a 94-90 home loss the previous night, Wednesday's practice in Miami did not have a funereal mood.

James was chatting and laughing as he shot free throws with some teammates toward the end of the workout, not far from where Heat President Pat Riley sat at his customary table to watch the proceedings. Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem teased each other about how much the other read, or didn't read, while enrolled at Florida. Mario Chalmers and assistant coach David Fizdale were talking about nuances of Boston guard Ray Allen's game.

"I think we're all disciplined enough to compartmentalize and focus on the challenge that we have ahead of us," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It never is easy on your journey to try to be an NBA champion. You'll always have these tough moments where you have to come together and go through that moment together. You can't skip it. There isn't an easy way."

There usually isn't an easy way against Boston, which is why this core of James, Bosh and Dwyane Wade came together in the first place. James wanted to increase his odds of winning a championship. Bosh wanted to get in the mix for one. When the Heat lost a first-round series to Boston in 2010, Wade vowed that Miami would get back to title-contending or he would go elsewhere.

"We got together, we want to compete for a championship, we want to win a championship every year," Wade said. "To us, it's not about outside expectations. It's our own expectations. You think if we lose, you guys are hurt by it? No. We are hurt by it.

"This is what we love to do," Wade added. "This is what our families love us to do. It's what we work all year for. We put a lot into it, obviously, as well as the other teams in the NBA. This is our job. So we're going to try to go out there and do our job and try to get a win."

That burden will largely fall on James, of course.

"No one said it was going to be easy," James said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge, me personally. I'm looking forward to it more than probably anyone on the team. So I'm going to lead these guys in the right direction, and hopefully it results in us winning."

Otherwise, it'll be another long summer.

"I put a lot of pressure on myself to try to come through for our team," James said. "(Tuesday) night I felt like I could have made a couple more plays, and I didn't. But at the end of the day, if you play hard, you go out there and lay it on the line, the numbers will take care of itself. And you can be happy with it."

Question for BS were you the one to end the relationship or was it ...

I was recently thinking about this, how many BSs out there were actually the ones who ended there relationship. Most affairs seem to follow the same path, The WS becomes infatuated with the affair partner and either leave the BS for their affair partner or eventually ends the affair (The latter being the most common in my opinion) But I don't read "many" stories where Upon D-Day or after an attempt at recovery the BS ends the relationship and I was wondering why that is.

So I thought I would ask do you all do you really think most affairs can be recovered from??

also when a recovery/marriage fails because of infidelity do you think it's because the BS wants it to or because the WS does??

I am the BS. I filed for divorce after a six month false recovery, in which my cheater spouse was not remorseful and expected me to be over his emotional, physical and financial infidelity.

I think a lot more marriages eventually fail. It may take five years or ten years but eventually the BS walks away. You don't hear about this on the internet because most sites are making money trying to instill hope that they can save your marriage.

I think the failure rate is far higher than reported.

MC can not save a marriage. It may delay a divorce and the counselors my never learn of that eventual divorce so the stat becomes that they saved the marriage.

I think what happens is that it takes the deception of an affair awhile to sink into the brain of the faithful.

Once it does they start to see how they were gaslighted by the cheater and the MC's into taking way too much responsibility for problems in the marriage.

IMO, in reality cheaters are selfish self absorbed people. Such people never change. It is part of their core personality. It may have been instilled in childhood by over indulgent parents, or it may be something inborn.

Eventually the faithful spouse realizes how selfish their cheater spouse is and when they do, rather than cheat, they seek a divorce.

I do think many faithful spouses stay longer than they should, but than eventually wake up.

actually I don't think most affairs can be recovered from, it takes true remorse from the WS and you don't see that as often as you see either rug-sweeping, deeper underground affairs or D. Chap throws around a 30% R rate and it would be silly to assume all R's are real, I would probably think about half of them truly are. So it would put the "real" recovery rate at around 15%.

as to the 2nd question- Both have to want R for it to work so that means the WS has to work for years at helping the BS heal and the BS has to value the relationship and WS enough to go through the pain and forgiveness.

So I can't honestly tell you who bails more, it's a tough road for both parties. I would think a WS doesn't "bail" by starting D process as often, but their actions will often cause the BS to bail (either by cake eating, rugsweeping, non-transparency, trickle truth, etc) So while you probably don't see the WS filing as often as the BS, their actions are the driving force regardless.

Exactly. IMO, cheaters are cowards. They want to end the marriage but since they are into the blame game. They want to force the faithful spouse to divorce them, hence they provoke them.

Most cheaters desperately want to see themselves as good people. They are not.

But to maintain their good person image, they continually emotionally abuse the spouse in ways that are not obvious to outsiders and when this provokes the faithful spouse to Divorce, the cheater can claim he tried to reconcile, when, in reality he did not. Also, they can retain their fantasy of being a good person.

Emotional abuse that is not obvious to an outsider is called ambient abuse and it can be very destructive to the faithful spouse.

5 years R here, filing for divorce this week. Everything you said could not have been any better. Selfish. That's all they are. They don't care, its all about them. Serial cheaters are the worst.

IMO, a lot of people try too long to reconcile because they want to believe it is a possibility and that all the pablum about a marriage being better after learning of an infidelity.

That's Bull hockey, IMO, a marriage is never better for the BS after cheating. It's only better for the cheater. He/she got the thrill of a new dating and/or sexual relationship, plus they get to keep their loyal faithful spouse. A spouse who all too willingly accepts blame and tries hard to make things better for the cheater.

What does the loyal spouse get. Nothing but heart ache, a bad case of post infidelity PTSD, a spouse that they can never trust again, a marriage that is a sham and never the same as it was prior.

A marriage is supposed to be a safe harbor from the stresses of the world, a place where you can feel safe and loved. No one said a marriage is going to be easy. It's work, but both went in knowing that and still agreeing to forsake all others.

After infidelity the marriage is anything but that for the loyal spouse.

Your spouse already forsook you for another, and if they were bad mouthing you to the OP, then they were all too willingly stabbed you in the back.

Nothing will ever change that.

Well, that's very comforting. I'm glad I don't feel that way about my marriage... and I'm glad my husband doesn't either. I know, this was specifically about which partner chose to end the relationship, if it ended. But reading the replies... I understand why there is hurt, anger, and even resentment... but saying, or implying, that a WS will never change is untrue. In saying that, the implication is that my marriage is going to fail (both of us had EAs), Entropy's will fail, Sigma's will, etc. I don't believe it. I believe that if both are willing to work at the marriage, it can be rebuilt. Yes, the majority of the work is on the WS, but the BS has to be willing to forgive... to truly forgive. I disagree with the idea that any who have been plagued by unfaithfulness are doomed to fail. I think it will fail if they settle back into old patterns again, but not if they truly work on fixing it. But that's JMO.

Sorry if this seems to be attacking. I DO understand that sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I just disagree with the thought that it ALL ends no matter what. If that wasn't the intent, then I apologize.

What we are saying is that the number of marriages that survive infidelity is much lower than reported by MCs or marriage saver sites.

There is no statistical follow though, and has been mentioned many those who decide to divorce five years later, never come back to sites like this or to a MC.

Also, what we are saying is that the marriage will NEVER be better for the loyal spouse. It may survive, but it will not be better for the loyal spouse as some marriage saver sites or counselors (all of whom make money off of perpetuating that belief) are saying.

You trusted someone, and now you can't. You thought you were special and now you know you're not.

How in heck does that make things better for the loyal spouse

In the case where both spouses cheated. Maybe it can work better. I don't know, at least two disloyal spouse know how it feels and have a level playing field.

Ok - I've got to chime in here on the cheater bashing. Yes cheating sucks and we deserve to have our ass kicked for being such selfish, self absorbed people.

BUT....

My wife will tell you - two years into reconciliation - that our marriage is better than it was before - that's even her screen name - better than before. She'll even say "it was worth it." Me - I can't say that. I've got too many scars, but she will.

What she got was a husband who realized that he treated his wife like a child and changed. A husband who realized that he had become an arrogant insufferable ass, got his teeth handed to him and learned the lesson. My wife has told me if the old me reappeared she would divorce me now that she has met the post A me. I have learned the lessons - I got the message. Intimacy in our marriage had left and it was my fault. The way I treated my wife wouldn't allow it - I recognize that and I changed it. I now treat her as a partner, as an equal as someone who can give to me and receive from me the intimacy a good marriage needs.

There are some cheaters who learn from the fvck up, resolve to change and do it. Not many granted, but there are some. I'm one and I'm not the only one on this board.

Early childhood neglect may raise risk of adult skin cancer

ScienceDaily (June 4, 2012) ? Skin cancer patients whose childhood included periods of neglect or maltreatment are at a much greater risk for their cancers to return when they face a major stressful event, based on a new study.

The research suggests that such experiences during a person's youth can set a lower level of immune response for life, which in turn might make them more susceptible to the kind of cancers that are often successfully fought by the immune system, so-called immunogenic tumors.

While the research focused on patients with a fairly benign form of skin cancer -- basal cell carcinoma (BCC) -- the findings appear as a warning for patients to be more vigilant in concerns over their health for the rest of their lives.

The study appears in the June 4, 2012, issue of the journal Archives of General Psychiatry and is the latest in three decades of research linking stress and immunity that have been led by investigators at Ohio State University's Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research (IBMR).

"This is the first study to show that troubled early parental experiences, in combination with a severe life event in the past year, predict local immune responses to a BCC tumor," wrote Christopher Fagundes, first author of the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at the IBMR.

"This expands the growing evidence that the consequences of early parental experiences extend well beyond childhood."

Basal cell tumors are considered the most common form of skin cancer, and much less dangerous than squamous cell carcinomas or melanomas. And their frequency is on the rise, the number having doubled in the United States every 14 years. Nearly half of all BCC patients will have an additional tumor form within three years of their first.

The researchers looked at 91 men and women who previously had a BCC. Each of the participants were given a battery of surveys and interviews, some of which gauged their past relationship with their parents as children. From this, the researchers could measure the degree of neglect or maltreatment the patients had experienced as children.

Tissue from each participant's tumors was also analyzed and tested for the presence of four types of messenger RNA, markers that measured the intensity of the person's immune response to their tumor.

The results showed that BCC patients who had a severe, stressful life event in the last year, and who experienced neglect or maltreatment from their mothers as children, had a substantial drop in their immune response to the tumors.

"Those in the top 25 percent of maltreatment by their mothers saw a 350 percent reduction in immunity compared to those in the bottom 25 percent of maltreatment," Fagundes explained.

Maltreatment or neglect from the father showed a 140 percent drop in immunity when the top 25 percent were compared to the bottom 25 percent, he said.

"We're not talking about abuse here," he explained. "And the effects were similar regardless of whether the harm came from the mother or father."

Jan Kiecolt-Glaser, co-author of the paper and a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State, said, "This means that for people who have had an early history of vulnerability and who are currently going through a stressful period, they have another reason to watch their health and be especially vigilant."

The findings are likely to be significant beyond just their role with BCC patients, said Ron Glaser, another co-author and director of the IBMR. Glaser, a professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics, pointed to other immunogenic cancers that might be affected.

"If the immune system is down-regulated, it will affect a person's ability to deal with that tumor," he said. "Some examples of other immunogenic tumors include ovarian cancer, head and neck cancers, melanoma, some lymphomas and tumors induced by cancer viruses, and renal cell tumors."

The researchers hope to continue the work and determine what mechanisms are responsible for the continued lower immune response.

Support for this work came from the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society.

Md. Gambling Panel To Hold First Meeting ? CBS Baltimore

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) ? A special gaming commission is deciding if Maryland should open an additional casino and allow table games at all state slots locations.

Political Reporter Pat Warren has more on the problems and possibilities.

The possibilities are for additional revenue for the state that could offset additional tax increases. The problems are a little more complicated than that.

Maryland Live opens in Anne Arundel County June 6, the long-awaited debut of the state?s biggest slots casino.

?We have 1,500 permanent employees here, we had 2,500 construction workers,? Joe Weinberg of the Cordish Company said.

Yet, still a week until the official opening and already it appears the game is changing.

?I think it?s not fair,? David Cordish, chairman of the Cordish Company, said.

The game changers are on this gambling commission? appointed by the governor and including members of the House of Delegates and Senate? to determine if Maryland needs to rework its original slots plan, put a casino at National Harbor, include table games and reduce the percentage of the state?s take.

?And, if appropriate, develop consensus legislation for consideration at a special session of the General Assembly in July,? John Morton, chairman of the commission, said.

That plan for a special session has been confirmed by the governor and Senate and House leaders who saw the gaming issue clog the works on the last day of the reguar legislative session.

The Cordish Company says changing now would create hurtful competition for Maryland Live.

?You make a deal, you stick with it,? Cordish said.

But Caesars Entertainment, which is applying for the Baltimore slots location, sees an advantage.

?We?re prepared to support the addition of another license in Maryland if we?re allowed to provide table games at a more moderate tax rate for our slot machines in Baltimore,? Gary Loveman of Ceasars Entertainment said. ?This has to be a winner for the City of Baltimore.?

There?s a lot to be considered. And they don?t have a lot of time to consider it. They are will to present their plan to the governor on June 20.

As of now, only two of the five designated slots locations are in operation.
