Syria pummels rebels as battered city collects bodies

Syrian artillery pounded a northwestern town on Wednesday and areas near the ghost city of Douma, where residents recovered mutilated corpses after a rampage by militiamen loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, activists said.

They said at least 11 people, including a six-year-old girl and an elderly man, were killed by shelling in the towns of Misraba and Rihan near Douma, and three more were shot dead.

Video shot by opposition activists in Douma, 10 miles north of Damascus, showed gory scenes in homes they said had been overrun by pro-Assad militiamen after army shelling forced rebel fighters to retreat at the weekend.

The state news agency SANA made no mention of killings in the devastated city, but said utilities had been damaged and that many residents had fled to escape "terrorism."

"These are pieces of our children we're pulling out of dumpsters ... We found these body parts and we are still looking for more. These are burned human body parts," said a man picking through an overturned garbage bin in one of the video clips.

Syrian official curbs on media make it hard to verify accounts of the violence raging on despite diplomacy aimed at preventing an all-out sectarian civil war pitting Assad's minority Alawites against rebellious majority Sunni Muslims.

Opposition leaders and Western governments say more than 15,000 people have already been killed. The government says terrorist gangs have killed several thousand troops and police.

Opposition activists reported an exodus of panicked civilians from the town of Khan Sheikhoun in northwestern Idlib province, but had no precise word on casualties from the bombardment, in which they said helicopter gunships took part.

Rights group: Syria's 20 torture methods

"They are flattening Khan Sheikhoun," said Mustapha al-Sheikh, a general in the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) who is based across the border in Turkey. "Assad is telling the Syrian people: 'Either I will remain or I will burn you'."

Another Syrian general defected to the opposition and fled to Turkey, bringing the number of such renegade generals on Turkish soil to 16, FSA officials said.

Turkey, once an ally of Syria, now hosts some 250 officers who have defected to the FSA in its southern Hatay province and gives them logistical support, but denies arming them.

Turkish-Syrian tensions rose when Syria shot down a Turkish reconnaissance jet over the Mediterranean on June 22.

Turkish airmen's bodies found
Turkey's military said on Wednesday it had found the bodies of the F4's two pilots and was trying to retrieve them from the seabed, where the plane's wreckage ended up.

Turkish Defence Minister Ismet Yilmaz said a funeral was planned for them on Friday.

"Yesterday the engine was found. Today other parts are being brought out. All the parts are being taken out bit by bit. We don't want to leave any part there," Yilmaz said.

Syria says the jet was in its airspace when it was shot down. Turkey denies this, although it acknowledges the plane, which it said was unarmed, had earlier violated Syrian airspace.

Reporter behind the lines in Syria sees no end to war

Ankara has talked tough and has repeatedly scrambled F16 fighters when Syrian helicopters approached the border in the last few days, but it has not retaliated for the shooting down.

Both countries have said they do not want to go to war over the incident, despite their bitter differences over the Syrian uprising against Assad which erupted in March, 2011.

In an interview with Turkish paper Cumhuriyet, Assad said he wished his forces had not downed the jet, but he also accused Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan of meddling in Syria.

"With his desire from the beginning to interfere in our internal affairs, unfortunately ... has made Turkey a party to all the bloody acts in Syria," Assad told Cumhuriyet.

Erdogan, once a friend of Assad, now demands he step down and has compared his crackdown with the crimes of Nazi Germany.

The Syrian leader, isolated in the West and the Arab world, can still count on diplomatic support from Russia and China, as well as his longtime Shi'ite ally Iran.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW): Daily iPhone App: Arrow Mania lets you hone your shooting skills by downing planes and solving puzzles

Arrow Mania is part puzzle, part arcade game that'll both entertain and challenge you when you have a few free minutes. The centerpiece of the game is an arrow-firing orb that you move through a maze of platforms using magnets. You must shoot targets to open doors and raise or lower platforms. Trickier shots require you to bounce the arrows around corners while you avoid hitting the friendly birds flying overhead.

There are also airplanes dropping parachute bombs that you can destroy in a hail of arrows. It's an all-round fun game that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. The game has 30 levels that start off short and easy and increase in length and difficulty. It also supports the retina graphics of the new iPad and the iPhone 4/4S.

Arrow Mania is available in the iOS App Store for 99-cents. It's a universal app that's compatible the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4 or later.

Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale

"A scale that tweets your weight? No thank you!" The biggest misconception about the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale ($159, direct)?that its signature feature is it posts your weight on Twitter, which it can do but doesn't have to?is how it miraculously landed in my hands for testing. No one else at PCMag was willing to risk public humiliation to try out a bathroom scale except me. And it's a shame that so much attention about the scale centers on Twitter, because the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale has one of the best displays I've ever seen. Smart and intuitive slider bars demystify body fat percent readouts. Weight, measured in imperial pounds, kilos, or even stones, appears in large, easy-to-see numbers. And the companion Web account (free) makes understanding your weight and other personal health metrics easier than ever, particular because you can send them to your doctor in a few clicks.

The Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale costs almost three times what I paid for my own non-Wi-Fi enabled bathroom scale (a Tanita BF-679W), which gives me just as much information about my weight and body fat, but doesn't automatically log and track it over time. That's the real benefit of a Wi-Fi scale, and it's a must-have feature for people who need to get a firm grasp on their fitness, diet, or overall health. For 30 bucks less, the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale ($129.95, direct, 4 tars) is nearly as good as the Withings scale, though the latter's display just can't be beat.

Design and Setup
Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale, available in navy or white, looks stylish, sleek, and sophisticated. The square glass slab has a thin profile and stands a scant 1.25 inches tall (0.9 inches, plus the scale's feet). The body measures 12.6 inches in other side. The underside contains a panel for four AAA batteries and a micro USB socket, used during setup.

Before you can use the scale, you have to set up a Web account with the usual information: email, username, and password. Then you need to download a small executable file onto your Windows, Mac, or Linux computer. After that, you connect the scale to your computer using a USB cable. The software walks you through connecting the Withings scale to your Wi-Fi signal. The whole process takes about five minutes.

The Web account is where you add more details about yourself?you can import previous weight charts, for example?and set up profiles for other users. Up to eight people can use the same scale, and each user can choose whether to make his or her information visible to other users.

When the setup is complete, just hop on the scale. The rest is automatic. Every time you weigh yourself, your weight, body fat percent, and body mass index (BMI) are logged in your Web account.

Withings Scale and Web Account Use
Every time you log in, the website shares tips and information about fat, lean mass, and other metrics the site records to help you better understand what they mean and why they're important. You can suppress the tips, but I found them surprisingly informative and presented in an educated way. It's rich information about personal health, not pop magazine tips for a flatter tummy in six weeks.

The scale itself is remarkably intuitive. Step on and it works, with no need to wake it up first. Withings' display is one of the best I've seen on a home bathroom scale. The scale indicates, visually, when it's busy calculating or sending information, the same way the Fitbit Aria scale does. It shows three main readouts, weight, fat percent, and BMI, but also includes a small bar below the number pointing to your point on that scale. The healthy range for your height, age, and sex appears highlighted. If the pointer hits within the highlighted area, you know you're relatively on target. The display demystifies all the numbers and percentiles that can otherwise be confusing to someone without much medical knowledge.

Another smart and intuitive feature in this scale is how it handles uncertainty regarding which user steps on it. If you have two users with similar metrics, the Withings scale may not know one from the other. So it asks by showing the two users' initials on the display, one to the left and one to the right, and flashing a foot icon above each. Stand on just your left foot to tell it you're the person on the left. That's pretty neat.

As much as the website has great customization options and loads of features, I encountered a few oddities and annoyances while trying to manipulate some of them. For example, to log in, you have to click through two or three pages before you actually reach the page with your stats, a minor nuisance.?

Configuring objectives, like "lose four pounds" or "decrease fat by 2 percent," didn't work the way I expected. When I opened the objective panel and typed in a target weight and hit Enter, the app changed the number to a different one, which I did not understand in the slightest. The same thing happened when I tried to set a target for fat percent. Hitting Enter radically changed the number I entered. Rather than risk messing up my account, I hit Cancel. Considering how effortlessly the rest of the scale works, I was surprised to feel I needed a long sit-down with a user manual for this section.

Interconnectivity and Sharing
Another awesome benefit of the Withings scale is that it can connect to an enormous array of other devices, apps, and health programs. It supports one of my favorite gadgets, the Fitbit Ultra ($99, 4 stars) and all its collected data from the Fitbit website. Withings also works with the weight management app Lose It! (free, 3.5 stars), health monitoring app Digifit (free to download, add-ons extra, 3 stars), the runner's app RunKeeper, and plenty of others. Withings also makes a blood pressure measuring device, which you can sync with your account as well.?

The options for sharing your Withings data are comprehensive. If peer pressure motivates you, you can have the scale tweet your weight daily, weekly, or after each weigh-in. You can also have your status published on a website, like a personal blog, shared via Facebook, or even sent directly to your doctor.

If your GP has a Withings account, she or he can access all your data directly through the site. Without an account, doctors (or anyone for that matter) can receive a one-time report via email. If you arrive at a medical appointment and the doctor asks if you've had any changes in your weight and blood pressure, you can log into the site and send the GP all that information in one shot.

Super Scale
Although it's quite expensive, the Withings Wi-Fi Body Scale packs a lot of value, particularly due to its companion website and ability to interconnect with other apps and fitness devices. That earns it our Editors' Choice. The Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi scale is very nearly as good and costs a bit less, but doesn't give you that gorgeous and intuitive readout display.

Boeing expects market for 34K new planes

Boeing is predicting that the world's airlines will buy 34,000 new airplanes over the next 20 years, driven by strong growth in China, India, and other emerging markets.

Boeing predicted that $4.5 trillion worth of planes will be sold. It will have to compete with Airbus and other competitors including Bombardier, Embraer, and China's state-owned COMAC.

Boeing says the most planes will be sold in the Asia Pacific region. The next biggest market is Europe. North America is third.

The Chicago company reduced its projection for the number of freighter airplanes that will be sold. It says the cargo market remains sluggish.

Boeing does a detailed annual study of airline sales trends. Airlines order planes years in advance, so Boeing has to make production decisions years in advance, too.

Violent weekend storms and days of record heat have killed at least 22 people in the United States since Friday. Some died when trees fell on their homes and cars, and heat stroke killed others.

Utilities warned that some people could be without power - and unable to run their air conditioners - for the rest of the week. More than 1.4 million homes and businesses from Illinois to Virginia remained without electricity on Tuesday morning.

In hard-hit Washington, Mayor Vincent Gray expressed frustration with the slow pace of repairs. Some 19,000 customers of local power company Pepco are still without power and the city is distributing food to people who cannot cook at home.

"We have had power outage after power outage in the District of Columbia. Frankly, the people are just fed up with it. I don't have any power in my own home," Gray told CNN.

Thomas Graham, Pepco regional president, defended the utility's performance, saying three of four customers without power had had it restored.

"We're working 24/7 as hard as we possibly can, but it was a catastrophic event and our system (was) literally devastated by that storm," he said.

Utilities have called in crews and equipment from other companies as far away as Canada and Texas as they grapple with outages in the District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Indiana and Kentucky.

Many Fourth of July celebrations across the region were canceled as local governments grappled with damage from the hurricane-force winds and with high heat and drought conditions that made firework shows hazardous.

(AP) ? Dara Torres lingered in the water after the other swimmers had climbed out of the pool.

Her long career was finally over.

She wanted to soak up the moment as long as possible.

The 45-year-old Torres came up short in her bid to make it to the Olympics for a sixth time. She finished fourth in the final of the 50-meter freestyle Monday night, her only event at the U.S. swimming trials.

"This is really over," Torres said. "That's it, I'm going to enjoy some time with my daughter, have a nice summer and cheer on the U.S. team."

After winning three silver medals at the Beijing Olympics, Torres underwent radical knee surgery and put all her hopes into a chaotic dash from one end of the pool to the other. But Jessica Hardy won in 24.50 seconds, while Kara Lynn Joyce took the other Olympic spot in 24.73.

"Obviously I was hoping to make the team," Torres said. "That was my goal and missing it by less than a tenth of a second is tough, but I don't think there's anything I could have changed."

Torres was denied a trip to London by nine-hundredths of a second, also touching behind third-place Christine Magnuson (24.78). Torres smiled when she saw her time (24.82) and hugged both Hardy and Joyce. When Torres finally got out, she began motioning for her daughter, 6-year-old Tessa, to join her.

Torres walked into the stands, still dripping wet, and scooped up Tessa, who was wearing a green shirt that said "Go Mom."

"She's bummed she's not going to London now," Torres said. "I told her I'd still take her."

In the last event of the eight-day trials, Andrew Gemmell won the grueling 1,500 freestyle in 14 minutes, 52.19 seconds. Connor Jaeger was right with him all the way, taking the second spot for London in 14:52.51.

Torres said she had the same nervous anticipation before her last race as she did at her first U.S. trials in 1984, when she earned a spot in the Los Angeles Games. She had no illusions about being a serious medal contender in London, but she wanted to end her career with one more trip to the Olympics.

"Being 45, getting fourth in Olympic trials against girls almost half my age, it's OK," Torres said. "I'm used to winning, but that wasn't the goal here. The goal was to try to make it. I didn't quite do it, but I'm really happy with how I did. I was able to hang in there.

Hardy said it was an honor to compete against Torres, who retired twice but came back to win five medals at the 2000 Sydney Games, then three more silvers in Beijing. This time, she's retiring for good.

"I love racing Dara," the 25-year-old Hardy said. "I wish she could have made it this year, but swimming with her the past couple years has been really an awesome treat for sure."

Hardy failed to qualify for the Olympics in her best event, the 100 breaststroke, but she bounced back to win the 100 and 50 freestyle, capping her comeback from a failed doping test that kept her off the team four years ago. An arbitration panel ruled that Hardy was the victim of a tainted supplement.

"Doing so well, winning two races here, I couldn't have predicted this in a million years," Hardy said. "I'm so happy and so grateful that this meet went as it did."

Joyce didn't even get out of the preliminaries of the 100 free, but she came back in the 50 free to make her third Olympic team.

"I didn't start out the meet very well," Joyce said. "I did my best to visualize and prepare my body. It was my one chance to lay it all the line for this 50. I can't believe I did it."

Torres remembered her late coach, Michael Lohberg, who died in 2011 from a rare blood disorder that was diagnosed just before she swam in Beijing.

"I was very emotional before my swim," Torres said. "When I was putting my suit on with my trainer, Anne Tierney, we started crying because I started thinking about Michael. In July of 2010, he had said to me, 'Let's go for this.' I really wanted to finish the story that I started with him. I didn't make it but I know he would have been proud."
