Our #MarvelAvengersWmt Family Fun Night Avengers Party ...

Captain America

We love the Avengers. My family has watched the whole series that has been made by Marvel comics leading up to the final Avengers movie. We have seen them all in the movie theater and own most of them at home as well. Naturally, we were one of the first to order the Exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD/Novel Combo Pack at Walmart, and we also received a copy of the limited edition Marvel Graphic Novel which is offered as a perk when you pre-order and only?available?at Walmart.

Marvel Graphic Novel

Most of our birthday parties and play-dates are themed after one Avenger or another. My kids play dress up as super heroes all the time, and guess what they are going to be for Halloween? Yup, Mason is going to be Captain America and Jakobi will be the Incredible Hulk. I purchased their costumes from Walmart at a really reasonable price and even got them matching graphic tees to wear under the costumes in case they get hot ? they can still be themed! As a matter of fact we were planning one and needed to get supplies. We knew the Augmented Reality app was just released and we could get more?characters?to play the game. Below Jakobi is playing at the Incredible Hulk. You can walk around reality and fight spaceships and bad guys smashing and bashing them in real time.

Augmented Reality

In order to get the Avengers?characters, you have to go to?specially?marked spots in Walmart usually on displays near Avenger-themed gear and goods. Below is a display that tells you about the Superhero?Augmented?Reality?app. You can download it at home from Google Play or iTunes. ?Look for the trigger spots in the following places:

  • Shopping Cart Rail Signage (at store entrance)
  • Sensor Shrouds (advertisements on security sensors at store entrance)
  • Pallet Train Display (Hasbro/Marvel/DVD/Mad Engine)
  • Toy Trend Pod
  • New Release End Cap (5D HVE/NR)
  • Content Pallet (Blu-Ray/DVD Pallets or Blu-Ray/DVD Extravaganza)
  • Costume Pallet (D18 Diguise ? Pallet)
  • Content Stickers
  • Apparel (4 Way Signage)
  • MarketSide Pizza at Walmart Deli

The Avengers App

Once you find a display, you take a picture of it with your phone and the toon is downloaded to your Superhero Augmented Reality app. You can hunt in all of the different sections in the store and collect them all.

downloading the Avengers

While we were hunting for new toons (this is what gamers call their?characters), we picked up a pizza for the party. It was Avenger-themed so how could we resist? If you have never tried a Deli Marketside Pizza, they are fresh not frozen. Mason wanted Captain America, so pepperoni it was.

Avengers Marketside Pizza

I stopped by the party supply area, and I picked up some Avengers cups?because?we were going to have Hulk green punch to drink. I knew we needed a Super-strong Superhero cup to hold in the Hulk?s awesomeness.

Avengers Party Supplies

Finally it is time to party. I made Thor hammer cookies from fig newtons and pretzel sticks. I also made Captian America?shields?to complete the Avenger party meal.

Avengers Party Food Ideas

Uh! Oh! Captain America is ready to sit down and eat. He knows he better chow fast before the Hulk comes. He was pretty impressed by the?Shields.

Wow! Great food Mom!

Too late! Here he comes a running! Take Cover! Arrgggghhhhh!

Incredible Hulk

Good thing Captain America has a good heart and shares.

Avengers sharing food

You can see more pictures from our party and our whole path to purchase these great items on my Google Plus Album. Noah has some pretty good poses in the kids gear! Check it out!?You can follow?@Marvel on Twitter?and Facebook?to keep up with the latest on the Avengers? activities!

Lab Contamination Behind Debunked Link Between Virus, Prostate ...

THURSDAY Sept. 20, 2012 -- A new study confirms that a once-promising discovery linking prostate cancer to a retrovirus called XMRV was the result of laboratory contamination.

The link was first proposed more than six years ago when XMRV's "signature" was detected in genetic material derived from tissue samples taken from prostate cancer patients. It raised hopes that using antiviral drugs to block XMRV could prevent prostate cancer.

Follow-up studies, however, failed to find the same signature and researchers concluded that XMRV is an infection of human prostate cancer cells in laboratories and not of prostate cancer patients.

The current study was published Sept. 18 in the journal PLoS One.

In this new study, researchers conducted a forensic analysis of tissue samples and lab experiments -- some dating back nearly a decade -- and confirmed that the reported link between XMRV and prostate cancer was the result of laboratory contamination.

The contamination occurred when traces of XMRV from other cells being handled in the same laboratory found their way into the prostate tissue samples, the team of scientists concluded.

"Everything arose from this presumed contamination event," study co-author Dr. Charles Chiu, assistant professor of laboratory medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and director of the UCSF-Abbott Viral Diagnostics and Discovery Center, said in a university news release.

The researchers noted that they used newly developed technologies. They said if these scientific tools were available when the link between XMRV and prostate cancer was first suggested, it's likely that the contamination would have been identified far sooner.

Previous research also detected XMRV among tissue samples taken from people with chronic fatigue syndrome. But the original study linking XMRV and chronic fatigue syndrome has since been retracted.

More information

The American Cancer Society has more about prostate cancer.

Priebus touts GOP fundraising advantage

Elkhorn - Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, said in an interview Saturday that the GOP has 10 times the amount of money in the bank ready to be spent on the presidential campaign compared with what the Democrats have.

Citing financial figures compiled by the GOP staff, Priebus said: "This was a great week. The RNC has $77 million in the bank and the Democrats have $7 million."

Priebus also predicted that Mitt Romney would become the first Republican presidential candidate to win in Wisconsin since 1984. He declined to say by how much he thought Romney would win by in the state.

"As long as get our 10 electoral votes and don't have a recount, I'm happy," said Priebus, the former chair of the state GOP.

He made the statements before speaking at the GOP First District Fall Fest at the Wiswell Center on the Walworth County Fairgrounds. The annual event had been scheduled to be outdoors.

Scheduled speakers included Priebus; former Gov. Tommy Thompson, who is running for the U.S. Senate; and Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch

Quit Smoking: The 10 Step Plan - Introduction

Quit Smoking: The 10 Step Plan - Introduction

Sian Welby talks to Dr Chris Steele about the addictive and harmful effects of nicotine. Dr Chris explains that nicotine is, milligram for milligram, more addictive than heroin and cocaine. Within 7 seconds of drawing on a cigarette the nicotine will be acting on the brain. This is why it can be so hard to quit. One in two of all smokers will be killed by it. It is the most dangerous consumer product available on the market. Nicotine itself is not dangerous, but when you smoke you breath in more than 4,000 other chemicals - this is what makes it lethal. With smoking still growing among your girls, there is a big health issue here. Although the smoking ban is helping, the enduring appeal of the "cool" look associated with cigarettes makes them attractive to young people. But there is help. Nicotine replacement treatments can remove the craving for cigarettes, without damaging your health. Also available on prescription are treatments such as Zyban and Champix.

U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Partners with Ad Council and DreamWorks to Combat Childhood Obesity PSAs featuring Shrek characters urge kids to "Be a Player. Get up and play an hour a day." WASHINGTON, D.C., February 1, 2007 / PRNewswire / – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Ad Council joined with DreamWorks Animation SKG today to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to help address childhood obesity. Featuring characters from the movie Shrek, the PSAs are an extension of HHS' ongoing "Small Step" Childhood Obesity Prevention campaign, which encourages children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt unveiled the ads at a press conference in Washington, D.C. this morning. The new PSAs, using the slogan "Be a Player: Get up and play an hour a day," urge all children to engage in physical activity. The PSAs will complement the current "Can your food do that?" PSAs which promote the benefits of eating healthy foods. Created pro bono by ad agency GSD&M, the ads include television, outdoor ads and web banners, which direct children and families to visit HHS's newly redesigned website, www.HealthierUS.gov, for suggestions on a healthier lifestyle. The Cannery, a west coast online development firm, created the new homepage, along with a kid's website at www.smallstep.gov, which includes games and activities to support the new PSAs. "We are pleased to collaborate with DreamWorks Animation SKG to address childhood obesity and possibly thwart the onset of chronic disease," said HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt. "I hope to find innovative ways to work as partners with many other companies in creating a culture of wellness. I am a strong supporter of the President's HealthierUS initiative and encourage all Americans to be physically active every day; eat a nutritious diet; get their preventive screenings; and make healthy choices." According to HHS' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of young people who are overweight has more than tripled since 1980. More than 10 million school age children in America–18 percent are considered overweight. In addition to the psychological and social issues of stigmatization, overweight children are at far greater risk of growing into adults who have cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and other chronic diseases that may reduce the length and quality of their lives. During the event, Secretary Leavitt announced campaign support from member companies of the Ad Council's Coalition for Healthy Children. The Coalition was initiated in 2005 to help combat childhood obesity by developing consistent, research-based messaging for marketers, media, government agencies, non-profits, academics and the private sector. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provided support for the Ad Council's research and development of these health messages, which will ultimately be disseminated to the public by Coalition member organizations such as PepsiCo, General Mills, Kraft Foods, Kellogg, Coca-Cola, SUBWAY, McDonald's, American Heart Association, Girls Scouts of the USA, Shaping America's Health, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Univision Communications. During 2007 and 2008, the Coalition will provide messaging and creative material for its members to utilize in their own communications, including an online presence across major marketers, non-profits and government agency websites, in-store and on-pack promotions sponsored by advertisers and significant media commitments. These materials will support the work of HHS and extend the "Be a Player" message, some of which will reach consumers in the first quarter of 2007. Further details regarding Coalition member support can be found in the accompanying quotes from organization spokespersons. "Despite all of the emphasis focused on childhood obesity in our country during the last several years, many children and families are still not making the necessary changes to lead healthy lifestyles," said Ad Council President and CEO Peggy Conlon. "We are delighted to continue our partnership with HHS with this new series of PSAs that are both motivating and entertaining for children. I am confident that this work, combined with the wonderful efforts of our Coalition, will have a significant impact on this epidemic." Using the Ad Council's model, all of the PSAs will run and air in advertising time and space that is donated by the media. Several media companies have made commitments to donate time and space to support the PSAs. These media companies include Nickelodeon, Outdoor Advertising Association of America, Turner Broadcasting System, Univision Communications, Discovery Communications, Azteca America, Comcast Spotlight and Cox Communications. "DreamWorks Animation is pleased to support HHS and the Ad Council on this important initiative," said company chairman Roger Enrico. "We can think of nothing more important than the well-being of our children. It's a delight for us to be able to share Shrek, Donkey and other great movie characters to help encourage kids to play and be active." "We were honored to be asked to help with this campaign with some new partners and DreamWorks," added Roy Spence, president and founder of GSD&M. "Using Shrek and all the wonderful characters in this creative collaboration was the perfect way to show children why it's important to get out and play." In addition to the new Shrek creative, the Ad Council and HHS are continuing their Small Step Obesity Prevention PSAs with new work (television, radio, outdoor, Web) expected to launch in April 2007. In an effort to further the reach of these ads and generate excitement among youth, HHS will partner with YouTube for an online video contest beginning in Spring 2007 that will encourage participants to submit videos based on the Small Step content. The Obesity Prevention campaign launched in March 2004, targeting adults, and focuses on the power of small steps taken regularly. The campaign expanded its target to children in the fall of 2005 and currently aims to encourage all children and families to lead healthy lifestyles. Since the campaign launch, the PSAs have received more than 0 million in total donated media support. Additionally, the campaign website, www.smallstep.gov, attracted an average of 190,000 visits per month during 2006. Ultra fast optical amplifier: Silicon and erbium on one chip for the first time

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Within optical microchips, light finds its way through channels, waveguides, made of silicon. Light from a glass fiber, for example, is led through a structure of optical channels with splitters and couplers. Silicon is the workhorse for this, but it is still passive conduction of light, with some losses as well. To be able to amplify the signal, or even to include a light source on the chip, extra steps are necessary. Other types of semiconductors, like Gallium Arsenide, are an option. But materials doped with the rare earth material erbium have good amplification properties as well.

Until now, no chip existed, on which both silicon and erbium-doped material were integrated. In her thesis, PhD candidate Laura Agazzi of the University of Twente demonstrates a working chip for the first time. It will be able to amplify light at speeds up to 170 Gbit/sec. The prototype chip has a signal gain of 7.2 decibel at infrared light (1533 nanometer).

The prototype is a starting point, but the results are very promising. One of the possibilities is a laser with an extremely narrow linewidth of 1.7 kHz. "In any application that needs emission or amplification of light, this integration of both materials is useful. It is not limited to telecom. You could use these chips for sensor purposes, for tracing extremely small particles, for example," Agazzi adds.

      Trade-off

Laura Agazzi has investigated the optical properties of aluminium oxide doped with erbium, to understand the mechanisms that influence the amplification properties in a negative way. One of these is called energy-transfer up conversion (ETU), which is detrimental for good functionality."If you want a large amplification, you would like to put many erbium ions in the material, this in turn can cause a higher ETU. There are possibilities in adapting the host material, causing less interaction of the ions. With my models, I have gained better insight in these and other mechanisms that lower the amplification.

Laura Agazzi (1983, Vimercate, Italie) conducted her research within the Integrated Optical Microsystems (IOMS) of prof Markus Pollnau, which is part of the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology of the University of Twente. On Sep 20 she successfully defended her thesis Spectroscopic Excitation and Quenching Processes in Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Al2O3 and their Impact on Amplifier and Laser Performance. Her thesis, or a summary, are available digitally.

Yanks sweep Jays, lead East by 1

      By RONALD BLUM

      AP Sports Writer

      Associated Press Sports

      updated 11:11 p.m. ET Sept. 20, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Ichiro Suzuki is streaking, and so are the New York Yankees.

Suzuki homered to start a comeback, then hit a go-ahead, two-run double in a seven-run fourth inning capped by Nick Swisher's grand slam as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-7 Thursday night to open a one-game AL East lead over idle Baltimore.

After struggling for much of the summer, the Yankees have won five in a row, their longest winning string since June 23-27.

"Having this momentum come at this point in the season, I think that's the Yankees," Suzuki said through a translator. "And I think that's what makes this team special."

Acquired from Seattle on July 23, Suzuki is hitting .321 since joining New York, including 9 for 12 with three doubles, a homer, four RBIs and four steals in the three-game sweep of the Blue Jays. He's batting .362 against lefties.

"Every time he comes up, the crowd gets electric," Swisher said.

      Suzuki thinks he knows why.

"You could say that I'm surprised, but maybe when I was with the Mariners in right field, I did try and communicate with those fans in right field, maybe make some friends," he said.

While the Yankees have won seven of their last eight, so have the second-place Orioles. New York, which led the division by 10 games in mid-July, hosts Oakland this weekend while Baltimore is at Boston.

"When we go on these rolls a little bit, it just kind of feels like everyone just mellows out. It's real quiet in here. It's real chill. It's not as hectic," Swisher said.

New York was down 2-0 before Suzuki's solo home run in the third. He hooked a based-loaded double to right in the fourth on an 0-2 pitch, giving the Yankees a 3-2 lead and extending Suzuki's spurt to nine hits in 10 at-bats.

That chased starter Aaron Laffey (3-6), and reliever Brad Lincoln loaded the bases with a walk to Jayson Nix. Derek Jeter followed with an RBI single for a 14-game hitting streak, and Swisher sent a 96 mph fastball into the right-field seats for his seventh career slam and third this season.

"I feel that we're getting that inner confidence back that we lost there for a little bit," Swisher said. "Regardless of whatever the situation is, whatever team we're playing, we feel like we're going to go out there and get the job done."

Phil Hughes (16-12) won his third straight start, allowing four runs and four hits in five innings with nine strikeouts. Hughes struck out Kelly Johnson with the bases loaded to end the third, then tied a major league record in the fourth by striking out four batters: J.P. Arencibia, Adeiny Hechavarria, Anthony Gose and Brett Lawrie. Hechavarria reached on Russell Martin's passed ball.

Backed by an 8-2 lead, Hughes also walked three and hit Moises Sierra with the bases loaded in the third. He allowed an RBI double in the second to Johnson

"Changeup command came and went. Fastball was kind of all over the place," Hughes said. "It was a nice night to get a lot of runs because I definitely needed it."

Toronto trailed 10-4 before a three-run eighth against Cory Wade and Joba Chamberlain. David Robertson struck out the side in the ninth for his second save this season and first since May 8.

New York's big fourth inning started when Martin walked and took second on a delayed steal, Curtis Granderson reached when Johnson fumbled his grounder to second for an error and Casey McGehee loaded the bases for Suzuki with a walk.

"That's a deep lineup and they're explosive, as you saw tonight," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

Toronto dropped to 66-82, ensuring the Blue Jays' second straight losing season and third in four years. Laffey gave up five runs - four earned - five walks and two hits in three-plus innings, dropping to 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA in his last eight appearances. There were 13 walks, eight by Toronto pitchers, and Blue Jays batters struck out 15 times.

"It's just one of those days that's pretty disappointing," Laffey said.

NOTES: New York (86-63) matched its season high of 23 games over .500. ... Former Yankees manager Joe Torre was on hand for a pregame tribute to Marvin Hamlisch, who died Aug. 6, accompanying the composer's wife, Terre. Hamlisch was a friend of Torre's and an occasional guest in his Yankee Stadium office. ... The only other Yankees pitcher with four Ks in an inning was A.J. Burnett against Colorado on June 24 last year. ... The Yankees have 10 slams this season, tying the team record set in 1987 and matched in 2010 and 2011. Swisher had slams April 21 at Boston and Aug. 13 vs. Texas.

Colorado man awarded $7.2 million in "popcorn lung" lawsuit

DENVER (Reuters) - A U.S. federal court jury on Wednesday awarded a Colorado man $7.2 million in damages for developing a chronic condition known as popcorn lung from a chemical used in flavoring microwave popcorn.

Jurors agreed with the claims by Wayne Watson, 59, that the popcorn manufacturer and the supermarket chain that sold it were negligent by failing to warn on labels that the butter flavoring, diacetyl, was dangerous.

The condition is a form of obstructive lung disease that makes it difficult for air to flow out of the lungs and is irreversible, according to WebMD.

Watson, of suburban Denver, was the first consumer of microwave popcorn diagnosed with the disease, bronchiolitis obliterans, his attorney Kenneth McClain said.

Watson was diagnosed in 2007 at Denver's National Jewish Health, a respiratory health center, after years of inhaling the smell of artificial butter on the popcorn he said he ate daily.

The verdict was the latest in a line of cases in the past 15 years, starting with workers in popcorn plants where diacetyl was an ingredient, that has linked the chemical to health problems.

Jurors found Gilster-Mary Lee Corp, the Chester, Illinois, private-labeling manufacturer of the popcorn, liable for 80 percent of the $7,217,961 damages and the King Soopers supermarket chain and its parent, Kroger Co, liable for 20 percent.

An attorney for the defendants had told jurors that Watson's health problems were from his years of using dangerous chemicals as a carpet cleaner.

A spokeswoman for King Soopers and Kroger said the companies intended to appeal the decision. An attorney for Gilster-Mary Lee was not immediately available for comment.

Similar cases are pending in federal court in Iowa and in state court in New York, Watson's attorney said.

McClain said he has represented microwave popcorn and flavoring workers across the United States who began suing in 2004 and have been awarded large damages.

He said Dr. Cecile Rose, a witness for Watson and one of his physicians at National Jewish Health, made the connection between his disease and diacetyl when she asked him if he had been around large quantities of microwave popcorn.

She had been a consultant to the flavorings industry and had seen the same disease that Watson had among workers exposed to the chemical.

The jury took a day to reach its verdict after a nine-day trial.

Retail channel surfing (Implications for sales, customer service, and ...

      Micah Solomon Keynote speech (video)

Never forget: Your customers are likely to use the different sales channels you offer in different ways. Some of your customers may buy exclusively over the web but visit your brick and mortar stores for a tactile pre-purchase interaction with your products. (Note: In the case of a grocery store, this balance may lean more or less in the opposite direction.).

Customers may, say, visit the Orvis store once a year, but always place their Orvis orders online. If your physical stores are thus taking on the role of sampling locations where a customer touches and feels products for later purchases on your website, it?s not necessarily a negative for your brand, if handled appropriately.

However, it does need to be planned for. It can be sabotaged quickly, for example, by overly aggressive onsite salespeople, or it can be enhanced by discount- or QR codes (If you?re not up on your alphabet soup:? QR codes are those two-dimensional barcodes that take you, via scanner, directly to a specific website) that let web or mobile purchases track back to store visits.

This may seem like an obvious insight, but its implications extend to how you design your compensation systems, and, frankly, to the tenor of the conversations you should be having with your people who work in various channels.? If your ?sales staff? at your physical location are essentially a sampling team providing advance work for sales you will later make via the Web or mobile devices,? providing a commission based on aggressive sales targets ? and bitching personnel out, or firing them, when they fail to ?make their numbers? ? is not going to serve your company, or the customers your employees ultimately take their frustrations out, very well.
