Four gunmen had entered Dr. Dennis Mukwege?s house in?Bukavu?on Thursday evening and forced his two daughters and their friend to sit silently on the floor, at gun point, until he returned home, according to the PMU,?a Swedish religious organization?which works with a hospital founded by the doctor.

The men forced the gynecologist out of his car on arrival and shot dead a security guard who tried to intervene. The doctor ducked when the armed men fired at him, before driving off in his car, which was found abandoned soon after.

?We believe it was an assassination attempt directly related to Dr. Mukwege?s advocacy work highlighting violence and rape in Eastern Congo. Only last month Dr. Mukwege was at the UN to give a speech outlining the increasing levels of rape and called for perpetrators to be brought to justice ,? says Zuzia Danielski of the ?International Campaign to Stop Rape and Gender Violence in Conflict.

With more than 500,000 women raped and 6 million killed in 16 years of violence, the international community is increasing pressure on armed groups to end violence in the mineral rich North and South Kivu Provinces. In the latest round of violence, more than 100,000 have been displaced in the fighting between government troops and the March 23 Movement (M23), led by Bosco Ntaganda, also known as ?The Terminator.?

Cellphone minerals

The war is centered on mineral wealth with armed groups using profits from minerals sales to companies in the UK, US, and Canada to buy arms, according to reports. The firms buy minerals such as Coltan used to make mobile phones. Rights advocates and churches have begun a campaign to cut off the funds flow, and analysts say the militias are fighting back.

Sarah Jackson, Amnesty International deputy director for Africa, said in a news release on Friday the attack on Mukwege?was one in a number targeting humanitarian workers and human rights defenders.

?The Congolese authorities must immediately open investigations and ensure that those responsible are held to account. Killing, abductions, and attacks on humanitarian staff impede on the delivery of basic services, as civilian bear the brunt of escalating violence in DRC,? said Ms. Jackson.

?Thousands of Congolese women and girls put at risk following incidents of sexual violence have depended on Dr. Mukwege for their lives and well-being,? said Susannah Sirkin, Physicians for Human Rights?deputy director, in a statement. She urged the Congolese government to make the doctor?s safety the utmost priority.

In September, Mukwege told the UN General Assembly he had seen elderly women, young girls, mothers, and babies raped. Others were sexual slaves and others used as weapon of war.

?Their organs are exposed to the most abhorrent ill-treatment,? said Mukwege, who has won several awards for his work.

After the attack, he told the media that rape perpetrators wanted to kill him because his denunciations upset them.

In Nairobi, Fred Nyabera, a regional peace building and conflict analyst, said the violence in eastern DRC was mutating.

?The armed militias are running out of options. They are trying to remain relevant by targeting civilians,? he says. ?But unless institutions including those of government are professionalized, equipped, and strengthened we have not seen the end of it.?

Pastor Josu? Bulambo Lembe-Lembe, a Congolese human rights defender, says the Congelese people want the mandate of the UN troops in DRC stepped up, such that they ?can do all that is necessary to protect civilians.??

Looking beyond space and time to cope with quantum theory

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2012) ? Physicists have proposed an experiment that could force us to make a choice between extremes to describe the behaviour of the Universe.

The proposal comes from an international team of researchers from Switzerland, Belgium, Spain and Singapore, and is published October 28 in Nature Physics. It is based on what the researchers call a 'hidden influence inequality'. This exposes how quantum predictions challenge our best understanding about the nature of space and time, Einstein's theory of relativity.

"We are interested in whether we can explain the funky phenomena we observe without sacrificing our sense of things happening smoothly in space and time," says Jean-Daniel Bancal, one of the researchers behind the new result, who carried out the research at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. He is now at the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore.

Excitingly, there is a real prospect of performing this test.

The implications of quantum theory have been troubling physicists since the theory was invented in the early 20th Century. The problem is that quantum theory predicts bizarre behaviour for particles -- such as two 'entangled' particles behaving as one even when far apart. This seems to violate our sense of cause and effect in space and time. Physicists call such behaviour 'nonlocal'.

It was Einstein who first drew attention to the worrying implications of what he termed the "spooky action at a distance" predicted by quantum mechanics. Measure one in a pair of entangled atoms to have its magnetic 'spin' pointing up, for example, and quantum physics says the other can immediately be found pointing in the opposite direction, wherever it is and even when one could not predict beforehand which particle would do what. Common sense tells us that any such coordinated behaviour must result from one of two arrangements. First, it could be arranged in advance. The second option is that it could be synchronised by some signal sent between the particles.

In the 1960s, John Bell came up with the first test to see whether entangled particles followed common sense. Specifically, a test of a 'Bell inequality' checks whether two particles' behaviour could have been based on prior arrangements. If measurements violate the inequality, pairs of particles are doing what quantum theory says: acting without any 'local hidden variables' directing their fate. Starting in the 1980s, experiments have found violations of Bell inequalities time and time again.

Quantum theory was the winner, it seemed. However, conventional tests of Bell inequalities can never completely kill hope of a common sense story involving signals that don't flout the principles of relativity. That's why the researchers set out to devise a new inequality that would probe the role of signals directly.

Experiments have already shown that if you want to invoke signals to explain things, the signals would have to be travelling faster than light -- more than 10,000 times the speed of light, in fact. To those who know that Einstein's relativity sets the speed of light as a universal speed limit, the idea of signals travelling 10,000 times as fast as light already sets alarm bells ringing. However, physicists have a getout: such signals might stay as 'hidden influences' -- useable for nothing, and thus not violating relativity. Only if the signals can be harnessed for faster-than-light communication do they openly contradict relativity.

The new hidden influence inequality shows that the get-out won't work when it comes to quantum predictions. To derive their inequality, which sets up a measurement of entanglement between four particles, the researchers considered what behaviours are possible for four particles that are connected by influences that stay hidden and that travel at some arbitrary finite speed.

Mathematically (and mind-bogglingly), these constraints define an 80-dimensional object. The testable hidden influence inequality is the boundary of the shadow this 80-dimensional shape casts in 44 dimensions. The researchers showed that quantum predictions can lie outside this boundary, which means they are going against one of the assumptions. Outside the boundary, either the influences can't stay hidden, or they must have infinite speed.

Experimental groups can already entangle four particles, so a test is feasible in the near future (though the precision of experiments will need to improve to make the difference measurable). Such a test will boil down to measuring a single number. In a Universe following the standard relativistic laws we are used to, 7 is the limit. If nature behaves as quantum physics predicts, the result can go up to 7.3.

So if the result is greater than 7 -- in other words, if the quantum nature of the world is confirmed -- what will it mean?

Here, there are two choices. On the one hand, there is the option to defy relativity and 'unhide' the influences, which means accepting faster-than-light communication. Relativity is a successful theory that researchers would not call into question lightly, so for many physicists this is seen as the most extreme possibility.

The remaining option is to accept that influences must be infinitely fast -- or that there exists some process that has an equivalent effect when viewed in our spacetime. The current test couldn't distinguish. Either way, it would mean that the Universe is fundamentally nonlocal, in the sense that every bit of the Universe can be connected to any other bit anywhere, instantly. That such connections are possible defies our everyday intuition and represents another extreme solution, but arguably preferable to faster-than-light communication.

"Our result gives weight to the idea that quantum correlations somehow arise from outside spacetime, in the sense that no story in space and time can describe them," says Nicolas Gisin, Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and member of the team.

The researchers that carried out the work, in addition to Dr Bancal and Prof Gisin, are Dr Stefano Pironio from the Free University of Bruxelles in Belgium, Professor Antonio Ac?n from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Dr Yeong-Cherng Liang from the University of Geneva, and Professor Valerio Scarani from the Centre for Quantum Technologies and the Department of Physics of the National University of Singapore.

Studio Foxhoven: Love Notes

It was an old box, hidden underneath a cabinet, with a light covering of dust on the lid that?made me sneeze when I pulled it out from its hiding place.?We were going through stacks of papers and other odd bits of household compost, determined?to clear out and clean the house. We never know what we're going to find when we do this. In one box,?we found cancelled checks from 1981. In a stack of papers, I found the class photograph from my first?year of teaching

.?

This box was one that had been forgotten for a long time. There was even an old smell to it and?I suspected the cardboard had gotten wet at least once over the years it sat hidden in the corner. More?than likely, the contents would be ruined and we'd have to throw it all away. I was curious enough to?want to look through it before tossing it. Maybe I'd find a treasure or two.?I found much more than that. Thankfully, the contents had been placed in a plastic bag inside?the box so it would be protected from any water damage. I reached in an pulled out a letter. It was dated?1979, the year we were married. I pulled out several more and realized this box contained all the cards?and letters that had been given to us at our wedding.?

I sat, mesmerized, reading notes from friends and relatives, many of whom had died years ago. I?could hear their voices again as I read what they had written to us. It was magical. ?Underneath the cards was a stack of letters Chris had written to me while we were dating. Love?letters. Chris and I met while we were applying for the same job. He was the lucky one. I got the job.

Because it required that I attend a summer long training in California, we parted two months after we?met and we really got to know each other through our letters. Without email or cell phones, and only?one telephone - a pay phone - in the building where I stayed that summer, we had to put our trust in the?US Postal Service.?

Recently, I learned my grandparents also got to know each other through their letters. They met?in 1917, right before my grandfather, Walter Myers, left to join the Navy, during WWI. I'm learning a?lot more about that time because my cousin, Sandy, has been putting together our family history for?years. A month ago, she gave us a copy of my grandfather's WWI diary, which she had transcribed and?put into book form. It's such a treasure! So is Sandy.?

Walter wrote in his diary every single day. He also wrote lots and lots of letters home to his?parents, his relatives, and to any number of young ladies. These he dutifully reports in the diary:?"Wrote to Margaret, Leota, Father, Warren, Aunty, Evelyn, Elizabeth, and Florence."?One of those young ladies was 20 year old Leota Bradford. As time passes in his diary, those?particular letters get more and more attention: "Wrote a good 12 page letter to Leota today and a short?one home."?

By the end of the diary, they are spending time together whenever Walter has leave. Of course,?this would be at the family's house. There are a few wonderful, racy comments such as: "Staid up till?one am and had a real good time. Tried to sneak up to the bedroom but were caught." One entry was in a different handwriting. It is so delightful that I must include all of it. As?Sandy did when she transcribed this, I am keeping the original spelling and punctuation.?

"I just finished reading this diary of Walter's. You knave little diary. He did not want?me to so while he was playing piano I excused myself and came out here and read it?at lightning speed, but I sure found out a lot.?

Well, we came to Clyde to my home this evening. We sure made some quarrels. We?turned our backs to each other. And just wouldn't speak. Then he wanted me to kiss?and make up on the train. But I wouldn't do it ha! ha!?

Walter is just an awful cold lover. Tonight we are going to stay up just a teeny little?while. I hope he isn't in the old navy very long. - Leota?

Another entry by Walter follows, "We staid up till one A.M. Went out to farm where Leota beat?me in shooting father's .25 stevens.?

I never knew my grandfather. Walter died at age 56 of a heart attack, five years before I was?born. Through his diary, I feel like I am getting to know him, just a little bit. I did know my?grandmother. Leota Bradford Myers died the day after her 97th birthday in December of 1995. She was?always full of life. She loved people, her book clubs, playing piano, and eating desserts.?

We lived across the country from her and didn't see her much. She did write, however. We?received cards for every holiday, including Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, and the 4th of July. One of?her Christmas cards was still in my box. I found it as I went through the wedding cards and my old love?letters from Chris.?

It's awfully hard to focus on cleaning when you have a box of treasures such as this. I gave up?and made myself a cup of tea. I found a comfortable place on the floor and started reading all those?letters from 34 years ago. Among the letters I also found a neatly folded piece of brown paper. I opened?it and saw the JUST MARRIED sign that our friends had taped onto our car after our wedding. I?smiled, folded it back up, and put it back into the box.?

Eventually it all went into a much nicer box that has its place of honor in our china cabinet, but?at that moment, I just sat and continued reading, holding all those memories in my hands and in my?heart.?

It doesn't suprise me that my grandparents could fall in love through their letters. We did, too.?

VoIP Telephone Service Providers, Giving You Great Worth for Your ...

The telephone is taken into account as the primary software used for communication. Almost every homes plus businesses within the United States has a telephone installed. The comfort it affords is unsurpassed as well as many people consider it as one of the vital piece of expertise ever invented by man. Moreover, with a phone, it is possible for you to to consistently keep up a correspondence with your loved ones and mates at an a lot efficient plus quicker way.
One other software used for communication is the internet. Like the telephone, this is also thought of as a breakthrough in communications technology. The internet allows individuals to speak freely by way of emails plus instantaneous messenger programs. Another great thing about the web is you will be able to share your digital information out of your pc to another user.
The web right this moment can also be used for different purposes. Your youngsters can put to use it to research for their time period papers, you can use it to buy products and services and you may even avail it for entertainment by enjoying online games, hearken to streaming music or watch streaming videos.
Nonetheless, the primary put to use for the internet is for communication.
Right this moment, one other kind of know-how is accessible in the business. This too is considered as a breakthrough in the communications technology. In reality, with all the advantages it might probably supply, many people are now subscribing to this service and are canceling their subscription on their conventional landline phones.
This communication software is named VoIP or Voice over Web Protocol or generally known as internet voice. Many individuals ask why increasingly people at the moment are subscribing from VoIP service providers for this service as well as are eliminating their standard landline phones. Some even requested what is so particular about VoIP.
To begin with, VoIP is very very like your standard telephone. However, VoIP makes use of the web to transmit and obtain audio data. Additionally, your voice is transformed to digital audio data. What this means for you is that it?ll allow you to transmit and receive digital audio information at a much sooner price along with clearer quality.
The fact that VoIP makes use of the web to transmit digital information, long distance as well as overseas name is much cheaper than conventional landline phones. Imagine calling overseas utilizing a traditional landline phone, you will see that an easy 5-minute name can cost quite a lot of money. With VoIP, calling the same destination on the similar length, you will note that it solely price a fraction of what landline telephones will cost you. Some VoIP suppliers provide free long distance as well as abroad call.
Another nice profit that VoIP could offer you is that it?s going to throw in additional telephone features, resembling three-method calling, caller ID, audio conferencing, video conferencing, call ready, return call and different options as standard. In standard landline telephones, you will see that each of those features are thought-about as extra function and they?re going to charge further month-to-month charges for using a specific service. With VoIP, all these options are free.
So, if you are desirous about getting VoIP put in in your home, it is best to consider getting in touch together with your nearest VoIP service provider. As you?ll notice, there are fairly a variety of VoIP service suppliers out in the market at this time providing their companies as well as claiming to be the best.
However, you can never really make sure if a particular VoIP service supplier is really able to providing nice quality service unless you try out their services.
This is why many VoIP service providers in the present day at the moment are offering a trial period, often 30 days, for clients to test the quality of their services. In case you are not satisfied with their services, you may simply inform your service supplier that you?re no longer eager about using their services. If you happen to do this inside the trial period, you will be refunded.
Look for a VoIP service provider that is able to provide maximum advantages for his or her buyers. Some VoIP service providers also supply free ATA (Analog Phone Adapter), free or low price IP telephones and other nice offers.
It?s endorsed that it is best to apply for a service provider that?s already trusted by the neighborhood plus presents a broad vary of nice incentives for his or her clients, similar to free long distance calls, limitless calls to specific countries plus different issues like that.

Lawyers: DNA proves Gacy victim was misidentified

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

When Sherry Marino visited the grave marked with her son?s name, she would ask, ?Is this you, Michael??

Each time, she felt nothing, a feeling she brought to authorities, questioning whether the body in the grave belonged to her son, Michael Marino, a 14-year-old who went missing in 1976 who had long been labeled a victim of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

On Wednesday, she was redeemed. She was on her way to the cemetery, marking the 36th year since the day her son disappeared, when her lawyers called her: The boy in the grave was not her son.

For years, Marino fought to have the grave exhumed. When she approached Steven Becker and Robert Stephenson of Becker Stephenson, they agreed to work on her behalf, pro bono.

After fighting bureaucracy, they said they succeeded in having the body unearthed.

?When we opened up the casket, we were immediately suspect, because there was neither a lower or an upper jaw bone connected to the skull and of course this was the major form of identification was through the dental records,? Becker said.

Added his partner, Stephenson: ?We did find a small piece of the jaw bone and another piece of the jaw connected to the upper part of the skull. One of those was tested, that?s where we got the DNA from.?

Previously, a forensic dentist said, based on dental records, that the body was Michael Marino?s.

But modern DNA, pulling from the same source, found Sherry Marino was not the parent of the exhumed body.

?She was relieved that now the rest of the world knew she was right,? Stephenson said.

Officials thought the body belonged to Michael Marino in part, Becker said, because the body was found in a grave site that included his friend, Kenny Parker, 16. Both boys hung out at an arcade in an area where Gacy prowled.

Officials ?have always asserted that Kenny Parker and Michael were in the same grave,? Becker said. ?Today we have proof that that was in fact not Michael. And if it was not Michael, was it Kenny Parker if he was identified in the same means??

Now the lawyers, who have argued that Gacy had accomplices, say the Gacy case must be reexamined.

Bill Dorsch, a former Chicago police officer, urges officials to look at a building at the corner of Miami and North avenues in Chicago where Gacy was a caretaker.

Dorsch knew Gacy and had even been in his home with his wife and son in 1974.

?One night coming home from my work as a police officer in Chicago, that?s when I encountered him walking from the building with a long-handled shovel in his hands,? Dorsch said.

Dorsch, who lived nearby, asked what Gacy was doing at that early hour. Dorsch said that Gacy replied, ?You know me, Bill, there?s not enough hours in the day.?

Seven years later, as Cook County law enforcement dug up bodies of boys and young men at Gacy?s home, Dorsch recalled their encounter. Since then, he?s been urging the Cook County Sheriff?s department to dig up the site near where they bumped into each other.

Witnesses also told Dorsch that Gacy dug trenches there at night.

Dorsch, Becker and Stephenson have also pursued the angle that Gacy had accomplices.

??The only way to bring closure to the victims? families is to investigate it,? Dorsch said. ?And every victim?s family that we talk to says the same thing: ?I just want to know.???

Is Your Business Online? Learn The Tips To Successful Online - First

Sometimes, we come up with ideas that would make a great business. The resources you can find on the Internet can make it possible to transform such ideas into a business, and it also offers you one of the most cost-effective marketing channels in the world. If you are looking for some ideas, the tips in this article should help.

Security is extremely important for every business website. There are reputable companies to choose from. VeriSign, McAffee, etc. that will protect the exposure of financial material for both customers and vendors. They may cost a bit of money, but are absolutely necessary if you want to conduct online business.

Start small when you are first setting out with marketing your product or service on a new website. When a site is overloaded with millions of indexed pages, search engines may pass over the site and target a page with fewer and more focused pages.

TIP! Do not give up on things that were not initially successful. A product or a marketing method that did not work might catch on later.

Always test how effective your email marketing is to see what resonates with customers. A/B testings is a great option. Write two versions of an email to send to your customers so that there is one significant difference between the versions. You could use two dissimilar subject lines, intro paragraphs, or calls to actions. Send each version to an equal number of randomly chosen customers and compare the success rate. Whichever one works best is the one that you should use for the rest of your emailing campaign.

Money is required to buy a quality domain. You may not find the exact domain name you are looking for. You can get a close one if you can spend around 1,000 or 2,000 dollars.

It is most important that your customers trust you and that you maintain their trust. Don?t pull information out of thin air for your website and other promotional pieces. Only put data that can be factually backed up and proven. Let your potential customers know that you are providing them with the best fact-supported data you can find. Be sure any claims that you make and testimonials you provide can be backed up by facts.

TIP! Make sure your site is full of high-quality content. You will attract search engines better by packing your site with loads of rich content.

Interview well-known business people and include it in your website. Just be sure to get their permission before you publish anything online. You could write articles based on your interviews and post them on article directories. This can increase your credibility while maximizing traffic.

Think about methods you want to use to advertise your webpage. Some easy ways to share your site are to post on blogs, use social media, and put posters in businesses in your area. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. The most important thing here is that you?re attempting to be creative and unique.

Make use of promotions to entice visitors to your site. You could offer for a day or two a $1 sale on a specific e-book. They will come for the sale, but they will often see other things that they like. This can be an effective way of attracting business.

TIP! Having a squeeze page is a good way to grow a contact list. This encourages your site visitors to offer up their email address.

Despite the fact that your company may not have the budget to hire an expensive marketing consultant, you can find many free resources on the web that can help in evaluating your marketing strategy. Some of the marketing resources available online and locally at little to no cost are online business forums, informational blogs, eBooks, and local business seminars.

When you are developing your website, fill it with content that is comprehensive and highly relevant. Your main goal should be to teach the viewer about your product in a timely manner. Avoid providing useless data and repetitive, bland descriptions. This is a surefire way to bore your customers.

Social media is a critical component of a successful and engaging online marketing strategy. Facebook and Twitter accounts allow you to interact with customers and help to create buzz. For a more informal and personal means of interacting with your customers, Twitter is highly recommended.

TIP! It is not necessary for Internet marketing to take place just on the Internet. Try reaching out regularly to bloggers, and them to attend a conference you are hosting to meet them in person.

Try to avoid thinking of Internet promotion as a job replacement, but rather as a hobby, especially at first. You should start by educating yourself about Online marketing and launching your first online business as a hobby.

A mailing list of your clients is essential. Have a subscription page on your site, or ask people for their email addresses when they buy something. Send customers information on discounts and sales that are happening on your site, or ask them for feedback about their order.

There is no exact formula to internet marking, rather it is half art and half science. True, you need to understand the technical aspects of marketing, but you also have to feel your way through the realistic side of things. Use and analytic approach with regards to profits, statistics and sales, but make sure to get creative when dealing with design and content generation.

TIP! It?s usually a good idea to keep your personal life separate from your business, but this is one case where allowances can be made. Without the pressures of a traditional job, this instance could be considered a means of profiting from a hobby.

You should never spam your audience with unwanted content. It might seem good to use web crawlers to spam, but this won?t give you the results that you desire. If you try to use that method you are more likely to have people turn away from your business than to seek more information.

Keep track of your progress by using tools that can tell you how many of your visitors purchase from you. There are a variety of companies that offer website evaluations and reporting. This can help you keep track of how many visitors you have had to your site and compare that with how many actually made a purchase.

Your goal is to build a solid business that will last and grow. Whether your business size is large or small, continued success comes from an effective marketing strategy. Be patient, and apply yourself; establishing yourself as a major brand can take some time.

TIP! You should aim to place a link in all signatures you post online to your website. If you follow message boards, have that link near your signature with every post you make.

Undefeated fighter plans to get married, then fight on the same day

Louisiana fighter Kurt Holobaugh has had a very hot start to his mixed martial arts career. He has rattled off eight straight wins with seven professional fights and one amateur. To keep his hot streak going, Holobaugh will fight at Fight Force International's event in Biloxi, Miss., on Saturday.

Earlier that day, he has a little bit of business to take care of. He is going to get married on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. The best part is that it was her idea.

"It was my wife's idea," Holobaugh told MMA Fighting. "Biloxi's a pretty city and she's a fan of the beach, so we're going to have a minister do a ceremony there. When we get home, we'll do a big reception and have family and team members down here. It should be good, it will be good to come home married and with a victory and celebrate."

Holobaugh is very smart to marry this woman. For the fighters out there, if you find a partner who shares your love of the sport so much that the wedding and a fight can fall on the same day, you lock it down.
